DamirGTI 342 Posted April 28, 2008 (edited) Hello ! I've been thinking , is it hard to cut out/weld in this part (cross rail on which the rear beam is mounted on) : (it's not my car on the picture ..) Also is this the part : 7251 37 CROSS RAIL ( No. 10a on the picture) : http://www.stuartmcguire.co.uk/pug/GB/205F/7/72C01A.HTM (the rail cost around 20-25.00 quid ..) The boot floor underneath the car it's in a good condition (just a few spots of surface rust..) bar this rear beam mounting rail , it's rusted a quite a bit outside and inside in the gaps .. so i was thinking , while i'm fixing the car i might sort that now as well .. Thanks ! Damir Edited April 28, 2008 by DamirGTI
RossD 44 Posted April 29, 2008 From looking at mine it just spotwelds on, so drill out the spotwelds and replace it I would have thought? I cant really see any other way it would attach!
DamirGTI 342 Posted April 29, 2008 Yes , but me thinks that the new rail must be welded back in "dead center" cos the rear beam is mounted on it .. and if not done precisely the rear wheel alignment could be out , which isn't adjustable like the front end so it can't be corrected afterwards .. RossD 44 Posted April 29, 2008 Yes, of course you would have to be accurate. Take a few measurements of the old rail before you take it off and use those as your guide.
Paintguy 0 Posted April 29, 2008 As you suggest, probably the hardest part would be ensuring that it's correctly aligned. I'd take plenty of measurements, including some 'corner to corner' ones with known fixed points. I'd also be tempted to just tack it into place first, refit the rear beam, and check all is well before welding it fully.
DamirGTI 342 Posted April 29, 2008 (edited) ... i think i'll leave this part for bodywork specialist cos it'll be a bit hard for me to weld this precisely while lying on my back under the car Thanks ! Damir Edited April 29, 2008 by DamirGTI
