BossHogg 0 Posted April 28, 2008 Ok before i shell out cash on various parts i thought i would ask here for help. Currently the oil pressure gauge isn't moving, however i'm not getting a stop light. Which I think means I have pressure in the system. When I put the ignition on the oil warning light comes on then when the engine is running it goes out, hopefully again pointing to the fact that I have oil pressure. I realise that checking with a mechanical gauge would be best but i don't have one to hand. So I changed the oil pressure transmitter (small one on the left) no joy. So i had a look at the Oil gauge transmitter, now this looks like it should have 2 leads coming from it, mine only has 1 but does handily have a lead floating around that looks like it needs a home. I would attach this up but it looks like the connector has been snapped off at some point. Now i maybe be talking utter baws, but if someone can confirm that the oil gauge transmitter has 2 connectors that would be a great help, thanks Rob Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
welshpug 1,657 Posted April 28, 2008 unsure of the wiring at the gauge end myself, not had to look at it closely, check if you have voltage at the sender unit, and if you do earth it and watch the gauge, if it works it should go to the top. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Sorry i didn't explain myself clearly (i hate typing ) , its the big sensor of the right of the 2 on the front of the block that i am unsure whether it has 2 connectors to it or not. One nearest the alternator (smaller of the two) is a SWITCH and turns the light on the dash on, has ONE wire going to it The second one further from the alternator (larger) is the SENDER UNIT for the gauge on the dash. This also has ONE wire going to it. Thanks tom thats brilliant. . So if i have this figured correctly, as the switching unit is working i have oil pressure i just don't know how much. So i now need to work out if the sender unit or wires between it and the gauge itself are fooked. I can do this by using Welshpugs info by earthing the wire. If the gauge moves then the wiring is fine and i replace the sender unit if not a new can of wiring worms is opened and i cry in public . thanks guys most appreciated. So i attached a mechanical gauge and fired it up, 60-70psi winner i hope anyway. So instead of buying a new sender at some obscene price (56 quid!!! bloody more expensive than a stack mechanical gauge). I thought baws to it i'll fit the stack gauge. So in a few hours a piece of carbon fibre butchered and i filled and air vent and woo hoo it almost looks reasonable. Can you get some close up angles or give some details on how you've done it? Also, is it easy to pop the actual vented bit out of it's housing? Promise not to laugh, I got it from *cough* demon tweaks* cough , the gauge was 30 quid, the adaptor by LMA was 5.92 and postage was 8.25, add with the vat it was 51.90. For now, i just pullled the whole housing out HARD and it popped out nicely. I then drilled out the pivot point on the right hand side and pulled the vent clear. Next bit was get a bit of card and blue peter it down to the right size and shape. Place on what ever material you have handy to make the gauge plate, trace round and then cut a bit bigger thus allowing for fannying around with a file to get it perfect. Then use a hole saw to cut the hole for the gauge body, remember for carbon finished side to unfinished with the hole saw, and the opposite way round when using the jigsaw to cut to size. For the mechanical gauge the body extends a long way back, so I had to cut the little supports for the vents system out and do a bit of modifying to the top of the pod to get the gauge to sit right. Then it is a case of slotting it in. I got mine to fit good enough to not require glue, which allows me to pull it apart if i ever need to. I'll send you some pics tomorrow to illustrate.
