dommorton 0 Posted April 27, 2008 I have just agreed purchase of a nice pair of 45's for my 1.9 8v The car is in standard tune at present but is running a Sytec upgraded in tank pump. The kit I'm buying includes a Filter King adjustable reg. Will this be sufficient to drop the pressure to a carb friendly level? I presume looking at the reg the return will now be redundant so where does all the excess pressure go? I would prefer not to have to fork out for a different pump if possible. (read: I can't really be arsed to change it either) but if it's the only sensible solution then so be it.
suth82 0 Posted April 27, 2008 I would advise purchasing a facet red top fuel pump as the injection pump pressure will be far too high. I beleive you could use the injection pump with a twin regulator setup but by the time you have purchased another regulator you would be just as well buying a facet. Matt Holley 11 Posted April 27, 2008 (edited) There are a few things you could do. a) Fit another reg with a return on it so exess fuel goes back to the tank, my old 205 had one of these to start with, it had 4 pipes on it, one blocked one in one out and one back to the tank, I wouldnt know where to get one from as mine started leaking the miniute I got it running so ditched it in favour of a facet pump. b Fit a tee peice so exess fuel goes back to the tank, I saw one like this years ago, dont know how well it works. c) Remove the tank pump and fit a pipe in its place and fit a facet pump in the bay with that regulator. You would only need a silver top pump that can be bought fairly cheap, around £50 Edited April 27, 2008 by matt holley
pee vee 1 Posted April 27, 2008 (edited) So you guys dont keep the original in tank pump and use it as a 'lift pump' to feed the facet one? would need to be regualted as well i spose. want to know as i'm gonna look at getting carbs soon i think. boombang 2 Posted April 27, 2008 AFAIK the Carter 4070 runs with no regulator - have it for my carb setup (currently getting it all ready to go on) and you can shut the flow off easily enough. Took the top plate off one and pressed up the floats very gently and it cut the fuel. Having issues with one of them leaking so maybe does need a regulator, but could just be incorrectly set float drop or a bad needle valve - did work when manually moving the float though! I removed the tank pump and put a metal pipe in its place, the facet pump is noisey when you first turn it on but soon goes quiet when its up to pressure,l have thought about having some kind of pump in the tank to feed up to the facet pump but not sure where you would get a low pressure for the tank and it would kind of defeet the object of having the facet pump at all. I use a regulator with mine aswell.
monty69 6 Posted April 28, 2008 I run two regs, the first is one of the turbo regs that can adjust fuel pressure with boost, this brings it down from injection pump pressure to 10psi and has return to tank. (has about four in/outlets) The 2nd is set down to 2psi. No problems done few thousand miles
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted April 28, 2008 Use a Red Top, If a pressure Reg fails you get all the fuel dumped onto the engine which can cause a nice little fire.
dommorton 0 Posted April 28, 2008 (edited) Thanks for all the input. Hmm well before seeing Miles' post I have already set off on the keep the std pump + Turbo reg with tank return + Filter King route. Bit of a worry regards fire risk. How often do regs fail? Out of interest do you retain the Tach relay with each set up? I presume definitely for the OEM pump route but what do you do when fitting a Facet? Oh and when fitting the carbs I was hoping I can continue and use the coil pack (Phase 2 car with coil on the inlet) the car has as standard for the sparks? I've seen many conversions use a wet coil though? Edited April 28, 2008 by dommorton
suth82 0 Posted April 29, 2008 The facet pumps just require a switched 12v positive and an earth. You can either wire it into the switched positive on the iginition so it comes on when you turn the key or just wire in a seperate switch to any 12v supply.
