Under Bonnet Temperature - What You Running?

Recommended Posts

madspikes

I'm getting into the debugging stage of the supercharging project (ok, bar the starter failure) and i'm concerned about the underbonnet temperature. The temperature seems to be around 60C, and thats not really after too much of a thrashing! The problem is that is heating up all the air pipes and thus heating the inlet air... I'm just wondering if this kind of engine bay temp is normal, and what I can do to reduce it?

Mad. :)

In normal weather and like yesterday, warm weather i think the 205 Gti fan is on way too much, i was sat in traffic yesterday and it was on every 5 minutes.I couldnt hear any other fans on any other cars so why is it that mine was?

If there is a heat issue why are there no bonnet vents as standard?

Are all other cars fans silent and ours are the noisiest around?

Surely by now someone has a cure, i work in computers and we can make silent pc's and also use silent fans, so why isnt there one for the 205 Gti !!

Would love to know why it happens to be honest.

Engine bay air temp under way on my 205/309s has generally been around 25-35C at the back.

A lot of people raise the back of the bonnet, should allow better airflow through and keep heat out. This does of course mean any under-bonnet fire potentially can come up the screen though.

Also can look at wrapping bits like exhaust manifold.

not sure of my inside engine bay temp but my race pug engine runs at 70deg with the fan on, ive got the Exhaust heat Wrap on the whole 4:1 Magnex Mani too, seems to hold in the temp well, i assume a high CR makes the engine run alot hotter!!

Even standard 1.9s always ran hot in traffic with fans cutting in soon after queuing in traffic so a supercharger's going to be a struggle to keep cool I think. What works best IMO, is a controllable fan that you can work as soon as you hit traffic, this way the fan's on top of it already before the temp has started to go up.

do you know what your inlet temps are like ?

are you getting any detonation ? or have you mapped it out.

The inlet temps ended up being around 55degs mark... And the amount of det just got silly, it was starting to get hard to map it out!

All was fine the pervious time out when it was raining, and about 3degs ambient, the engine bay temps didnt get silly!

The plan is to try and get some more air flow through the engine bay... Maybe some ducting from the fogs or such like... Anyone any pics of ducting running from the fogs to the engine bay? Also may try jackup up the back end of the bonnet. I want to steer away from bonnet vents and scoops...

Anyway, progress is all stop while the charger comes out to fit a new starter motor!

mad.

i have been through the same experiance as far as s/c and charge cooling vs inlet temps.

unless you have a good size Reservoir of water and a very efficient charge cooler in a good position you may find it hard to keep inlet temps down.

i solved my problem by fitting a air to air intercooler.

my max inlet temps is around 18-21 degs at around 18psi on a warm day
