Ok Here Goes, scratch Heads Time I Think!

Ok , i have the 205 Gentry and it has had its head gasket done and is running very nicely indeed ( touch wood) but my plan was always to go for more power and make it a minter.

So as has been widely documented, the 105 bhp 1.9 engine in it is as much as the (1.6 auto) gearbox can handle for power and torque.

So my question is, if i moved up to 306 GTi-6 power, is there a PSA gearbox that can be mated to it to allow me to keep my idea of a 'performance auto' 205?

If that is not possible, is there a PSA engine and auto box that can be dropped into the 205 with little modification?

So far my own knowledge goes as far as knowing there was a 309 Gti auto , so i could make the change to that but it wouldn't be worth it for the extra 17bhp.

Regards

Mad Professor

I did a Mi16 converion on my friends 205 Gentry, using the standard 205 Gentry autobox, We killed 3 autoboxes, so I don't know if it was just bad luck with the boxes or the boxes just could not handle the power or how he drove it.

Go for a 8v 2.0ltr Xu auto usually found in 405's and xantia's or even a 406 auto set up (dont know if the 406 uses 16v engine or not though?).

If you want some one to do the work for you I would be happy to take it on,also would you be interested in selling me the Gentry engine ?

Cheers

I didnt think of the 8V engines , i just automatically presumed 16V for a worthwhile upgrade, i dont want to go as old as 405, so it would seem to be 406/Citroen equivalent , but i do want to be up around the GTi-6 horse power mark when all sorted.

I have an amazing Gentry engine now, it has had all Peugeot parts and is a nippy little thing now, now with the benefit of hindsight i know it must have been running with a slowly developing head gasket problem for months, as it now is much torquier., and 0-35 is as fast as anything :), but yes i would sell it to you if i sourced an equally good replacement.

As far as doing the work, i would have to talk to you more, distance and such like is a consideration and also my trade may be of benefit to you so we shall speak further im sure.

I am actually half tempted to go HDI with auto after reading online about the 110bhp engine is mated to an auto box.It would be unique im thinking , 205 HDI auto

The Auto box is on it's limit's with the 1.9 engine, I;ve known the boxes to go wrong around the 80k mark on a few,

If you have a look at the 406/XM Auto box's they are huge and off hand not sure if they are controlled by a ECU which would also need wiring in if doing the conversion so a early one would be your best bet to avoid this
