Torque Wrench Settings For Suspension

this weekend or next im going to be doing alot of work to the front of my XS and i thought id torque everything up properly, although doing it normaly has never failed... touch wood :wacko:

 

Any way i thought id post up the torque setting as when i searched nothing showed up.

I assume the settigns are for both gti and non, except where specified...

 

Front suspension,

Top mount bolts....................................12Nm

Shock absorber piston rod (the large top mount nut)

self locking.........................................45Nm

crimped.............................................70Nm

Strut clamp bolt.....................................58Nm

anti-roll bar clamp..................................35Nm

anti-roll bar end (non GTI)......................75Nm

Bottom balljoint clamp............................35Nm

Anti-roll bar guide bar.............................30Nm

lower suspension arm pivot bolt...............35Nm

anti-roll bar end (GTI).............................58Nm

lower suspension arm rear pivot bolt (GTI)...78Nm

 

Rear suspension

Shock absorber upper mounting......75Nm

Shock absorber lower mounting......118Nm

Anti-rollbar arm.............................35Nm

Torsion bar plug............................20Nm

Suspension top mountings..............45Nm

suspension front mounting pivot bolt....80Nm

 

Wheels

All road wheel bolts.........85Nm

 

**on alloy wheels, oil the ends of the bolt threads over a maximum length of 10mm befroe fitting**

Thought id stick the brake and hubnut torque settings in while i was at it....

 

Brakes

Calliper Mounting bolts,

Girling...................97Nm

D B A bendix..........120Nm

Rear back plate.......37Nm

Rear hub nut...........215Nm

 

 

Driveshafts

Hub carrier to strut clamping bolt......58Nm

Hub Nut

Non GTI models..............................250Nm

GTI models....................................260Nm

Front suspension lower balljoint (gti)....35Nm

Intermediate bearing bolt.................18Nm

 

 

Steering

Steering gear..........................35Nm

Column to pinion clamp bolt......15Nm

Track rod balljoint nut..............35Nm

Track rod inner joint................50Nm

Steering wheel nut..................30Nm

Thought I'd resurrect this old topic as I am also looking for the torque settings for the sub frame bolts and no-one seems to have answered this. I did them to 70Nm, does this sound about right?

Just had a search for the subframe bolt torque, found the answer in another thread, courtesy of Welshpug.

 

Anyway copied here for future ref.

 

Front bolts 75 Nm / 55 Lbft

rear bolts 53 Nm / 39 LBft.

Are these settings for just the Gti? I've just tried to torque these up on my CTi (it has the same subframe as the non Gti) and the 75NM would have stripped the captive nut if I carried on tightening it. It's only a M10 bolt and I thought 75 was a bit high,

The 53N like the rears are about right.

Could be my mistake, I'd replaced the bolts with new 8.8 grade and it got me thinking, so I cleaned the old ones up and it looks like the original front two bolts were grade 10.2 and for some reason the rear four are 12.9!?

Looks like Ive only damaged the new bolts, thank god as the old ones went in OK, I didnt fancy removing the whole subframe again to replace the captive nuts.

Still not sure about the 75NM setting though, it seems high so they're in at 53NM at the moment.

Update. The settings

Front bolts 75 Nm / 55 Lbft

rear bolts 53 Nm / 39 LBft.

are correct.

 

I replaced the fixings with with 12.9 socket heads (Hex head bolts were special order) and they tightened up fine to the settings above.

Should steel wheels also be torqued at 85Nm?

 

I was told 110Nm.

I dont know where they got that figure from but any psa vehicle i can remember with the m12 bolts are 63 lbft or 85Nm.

Can anyone tell me how to torque the inner ball joints to the rack? I had tightened them up with a strap wrench onto the lock washer, bit worried about it.

I've always just used stilsons in the past but I recently got a Facom tool specifically for track rods, it's the same tool Peugeot dealers use.

 

One of these - http://www.tooled-up.com/manproduct/facom-3-8-drive-36mm-track-rod-end-release-tool/186596/ - but I don't remember if it is 36mm or another size for 205s so you need to check.

Am I being blind or is the wishbone bolts torques listed for the gti there? Lower arm rear pivot Bolt? So the front smaller Bolt torque setting?

lower suspension arm rear pivot bolt (GTI)...78Nm

It's there but as said in your other topic, getting something in to do the torque is a different matter.

What is the correct torque for the rear beam mounts? I tried the torque that was in haynes manual and one stripped the rubber from the bolt and the bolt keep spinning now.

Hi there,

 

Regarding the steering column mounting I'm not entirely sure I understand the Haynes descriptions correctly.

 

There is an spec: Column-to-pinion clamp bolt of 15 Nm. As there is an intermediate shaft involved this seems to me as a misnomer. Or I am not looking at the correct spec. Anyway what is the torque of the bolt and nut that mounts the steering column to the intermediate shaft inside the cabin after the U joint?

 

Also what would be reasonable to torque the 4 nuts down to mount the steering column to the frame on the bulkhead.
