Tran-x Lsd Stripdown And Inspection Guide/hints?

Recommended Posts

Anthony

Meant to be buying a Tran-X plate LSD off a friend of mine this weekend.

I'd like to strip and inspect it before buying as age, mileage and service history of the unit are unknown (although it subjectively seemed to work fine), and to find out how the diff is setup in terms of ramp angles etc as it's going on a road-going car without PAS

I'm sure that it'll probably be obvious enough when I see it, but does anyone have a guide or any hints with regards stripping it down and determining what configuration (ramp angles etc) it is in? Also, whilst the plates are the main thing that wears, what other areas do I need to pay close attention to?

I've done a search on Google and this site, but couldn't really find anything.

I'm sure i have a document somewhere that explains all you need to know.

There is nothing at all complicated about a tran-x. just delve in and make sure you keep everything in the order it comes out.

Make sure you loclite the bolts and you'll need ford mtx75 crownwheel bolts if you don't allready have some....the pug ones dont work as you can't get a socket on the heads of them.

Just check for wear an contamination on the friction plates and for wear on the ramps.

A rebuild kit is only £80 so might be worth treating it to a set of plates while its on the bench.

Going from memory but unless they are gouged I doubt youll see much wear on the plates. Mine was new and had no patterning on them, just smooth and slightly concave. The friction plates are generally in different orders depending on the pre-load of the diff, make a note which way round and in what order they came out, and make sure both sides are symetrical when putting back together. When you take the 8 black bolts (in pic) out the centre that hold it all together youll see 2 different cam'd areas on the main body. These are the ramp angles, just rotate to change before bolting together.

And I still dont know why they insist on making people buy ford bolts to fit the final drive, you dont need anything other than the original pug bolts. Drop the centre of the diff out as to change the preload and theres plenty of space to fit a socket on the bolts, just make sure to use loctite when doing all 16 bolts back up.

Forgot to add you'll see the ramp angles as either a semi-circle 45/45 or a half teardrop share 60/30. Pre-load on the plates I cant remember but I do still have the badly photocopied piece of paper in the garage.

I found a similar drought of Tran-X info when I bought mine a couple of months ago.....

I eventually managed to source an official Tran-X stripdown sheet for the LSD unit which makes everything really clear about the lightened Vs Fully Interlevered Plate setup etc etc. The Ramp angle part again as previously stated is really clear when you strip it apart but not so easy to get real info on what set up for what application. I'm going with the 45/45 just now - First track outing next Monday so will see how it goes....

For info - my Tran-X was a couple of years old when I bought it & it had seen a reasonable amount of previous track action and was almost as new when I stripped it down. There was hardly any wear at all on any of the internal plates, gears or axles.

I only have a hard copy of the Tran-X strip down sheet including torque values for the eight bolts but if you PM me a fax number I could fax you a copy.

Be good to return the favour cos I'm sure I've PM'd you a couple of times !
