Blue Smoke When Warm...help.

hello,

 

just about finished my mi16 conversion on my car, the engine hasnt been ran properly on the road for two years when i got it, the guy i got it off said it had only done 64 thousands miles, so i didnt rebuild it. its had a new pressure gauge sensor on it by the way.

 

so i start it today, the oil is half empty, but doubt that would make it produce blue smoke, so i left it running, and it noicted when the fan kicked it, that when i was reving it small amounts of blue smoke, and the oil pressure seemed right down, reved it to 4 thousand revs, and the oil pressure went to just half way on the guage. is that low?

 

compression test is needed i know, juts wanted to know your thoughts.

Blueish smoke is oil burning. Most likely the valve stem oil seals or oil control rings (piston rings). Im not sure how they normally wear on Mi's, but i wouldnt think 60k is the sort of area they start going unless theyve had a very hard life.

yeah thats what i thought, i cant see it being the piston rings, mind i thought valve stem oil sealsonly do that when car is cold, not when warm.???

 

the engine was from a honest guy, and he did say it was 64k on it, .

just had a thought, my exhaust manifold gasket is leaking, so could this effect the fueling at all, making it produce blue smoke? probs not, just a hope...

Depends..what engine it is etc ?

 

If its non cat, no lamda, then the fuelling is done and dusted after it leaves the head. If its cat / lamda, then the leak will give the ecu a false fuel readign, and it will adjust the fuelling to compensate. But, id sort the leak asap. Never try and diagnose unknown faults when there are known faults present :ph34r:

 

Stem seals can leak hot or cold. Depedning how worn they are. A thicker oil could help, but obviously your not curing anything :wacko:

If its only done that mileage then its likely its stood for a while, which can cause the stem seals to dry out. But personally i'd change the oil and filter and take it for a long drive, which often solves the problem if its not been run in a while.

well since ive had it its been started in total for a bout a hour, but its not road worthey yet as i have to shortern my downpipe.

 

the oil has been changed but it is only half full, other than that the engine is fine. only thing is when its warm on idel the oil pressure is right down, and its had a new guage sensor...

I'd get it to the stage where it can be driven, the engine needs to be put under load. Take it for a good thrash to clear the cobwebs and see how it is then but it may be the case the stem seals need doing.

well i started it today again, didnt leave it as long to run as it was running out of fuel, but no blue smoke, and the engine was warm, the oil temp gauge hadnt moved so like yesterday, so it wouldnt have been as warm, but its looking good...

I agree - Get at least a 100 miles on it to let things settle down before worrying at all about smoke.

 

In some ways smoke at this stage is a good thing as hopefully there was some oil in the bores during storage to stop any rust starting on the sides of the cylinder liners.....
