Identifying 4x4 Mi16 Cams And/or Engine

Recommended Posts

I've bought an Mi16 motor, which is supposedly out of a 4x4 Mi16.

Is there anyway of checking the cams to see if they are the right ones? Are they marked in anyway with a code?

Cam cover is a dark blue which i've not seen before.

Would the engine have any different markings to a 2wd one? I think theyre both XU9J4 D6CL motors?

I think the ECU is a 139 (2 row), does this have the 7400rpm rev limit, is it the correct one for the 4x4 motor?

Mi16x4 blocks only have three mounting holes (the fourth is recessed) for the rear lower engine mount, whereas 2wd ones have four.

You can't really tell if the ECU is the 4x4 one or not, unless of course you've tested it, or personally removed it from a 4x4 and presuming it was original. As i'm pretty sure 139's were in 2wd Mi16's too.

There might be a paint code or something on the cams, but I've never been able to tell the difference except by measuring the duration, which is bugger all difference anyway. Here's the part numbers if that helps.

Sorry should've said I know about the 3 mounting holes. The fourth is/was there but has been machined down. There's a possibility it's a 2wd engine but fitted with 4x4 cams tho, hence the reason for asking about the cams too. ECU hasn't been opened up (still has the seals on it). It was running the engine in the 4x4 I removed it from. The enigne has been changed at some point to the one that came from Vicki's 4x4, but that was previously in a 2wd car. So there's a chance it may have 4x4 cams in it. I'd just like to find out that's all.

Also are the cam pulleys interchangeable between IL and EX? ie will a 4 IL work on an exhaust cam?

If I'm reading the parts numbers correctly, later cars (>8690195) had the same cams as the Mi16x4 anyway. Probably when they started using the #4 pulley on the inlet. Coinciding with the 3 row ECU?

Also, what does everyone make of these part numbers? Did the Mi16x4 have a different ECU or not?

mines from a 1990 4x4 car. ECU is a 139 as stated. I've heard it said tho that 4x4's had a 7400rpm limiter and not a 7100rpm as the 2wd ones. But can't see it with the same ECU no.

I have 2 inlet and 4 exhaust pulleys fitted. Didn't get around to taking the cam cover off. Belt tensioner bolts have been rounded off so need to get the welder out tonight to get them undone.

Engine is so bad put together with broken loom connectors etc that I@m not surprised the previous owner had a running problem with it!

No need - put a sump plug key in the square of the tensioner, and simply turn it anti-clockwise - that will loosen the tensioner bolt sufficiently that you can unwind it with your fingers. Replace it with the later 13mm hex headed bolt.
