M16 Distributor Problems

Hi Everyone,

 

I m new to the forum and have a problem with my new 205 Mi16. On the way back from picking it up, I seemed to lose power and felt like it was running on three cylinders. Anyway, when I got home it turned out that the distributor was slightly broken. I replaced this and all was running fine (I d maybe done 50 miles in it) until i lost all power in it last weekend, anyway after getting it towed and opening the bonnet, the distributor was broken again and the rotor arm had come off. Now, I have replaced this yet again but before I ue the car, is there something wrong that needs checking/changing?, or is it just extremely bad coincedence. I m guessing its the former and don t want to go breaking another distributor (£45 every other week is a bit much!).

Try a search mate. Pretty much everything ever to happen has been covered soemwhere on here :)

 

My advice would be to fit the Mi loom and ecu. Much better than running it of the 8v loom. Theres plenty of guides around, its not hard to do. And will probably only cost you 2-3 weeks worth of dizzys tops!!

Yeah I tried the seach but could nt find anyone with this problem.

 

If it goes again i will swop the loom etc. presumably i would need the ecu and loom of an mi16, and a standard mi16 distributor?

I agree with Rkkrom, fit the proper 16v wiring and ecu, it will run better

 

you should find some second hand bits on ebay or some one with a spare may post here,

 

lots of wiring help guides on here

Yeah you would need the loom and ecu. The engine will run better, and the rev limit will be correct.

 

Theres loads of stuff floating around. Even simple connect x to y diagrams etc :)

 

In the long run its worth doing.

Hang on a second are you actually running it on 8v management as your saying that the cap is 45 squid which to me sounds like a normal Mi one which would therefore mean your running it on Mi managment anyway ! Heres a picture of mine on standard management so you can see what the distributor setup looks like for comparison (if you need it).

Mine also did this a while back which was where one of teh bolts on the rotor arm had come loose and it had self-destructed that way. Someone mentioned they had had it happen before from a bent cam as well !!! Not sure that that helps you much really but does it looks as though the rotor has come off or rotated off axis from a loose/knackered bolt or was it still attached bit cracked or something ?

If its running mi16 management , is the white plastic spacer in good condition? i had the same problem years ago, ended up carrying a spare cap with me. Also im assuming that was a genuine citroen/pug part for that price? if not you should try getting genuine ones.

I ll get some photos and post it up. i m not certain but I thought its on 8v management as the rev limiter appears to kick in earlier than an mi16 management. I did nt actually get to look at it properly the first time, it was partly smashed and my neighbour who is a mechanic just chanegd it for me. The sesond time, a screw ahad come out of the rotor arm and embedded itself in the cap, the rest of the cap got smashed up.

Must be running Mi Management as the 8V rotor arms push on, not screw on?

Also im assuming that was a genuine citroen/pug part for that price? if not you should try getting genuine ones.

 

For genuine ones, double that price and add on a gratuity and you are in the right ball park :D
