ifcho 0 Posted April 19, 2008 Hi, So I'm building a 1.6 motor, using a 1.9 block. I also have both oil pump assemblies. From what I can see visually, the crank gear for the 1.9 oil pump is much larger than the 1.6 one. The 1.6 pump is from a `86 car and the 1.9 from a `92 128bhp model. So now I'm wondering which assy I should use. I guess most votes would be for the 1.9 one ? Additionally I noticed something rather strange (and most probably I have gotten it wrong) but it seemed to me that the 1.9 gear is of the friction driven type. Is this possible on a late 92 engine? B) as in such case, I am not too keen on using it
2-Pugs 57 Posted April 20, 2008 I remember years ago taking apart both a 1.6 and 1.9, I think I noticed then that the oil pump gears were different. My vote would probably be for the 1.9 which I assume would give a faster drive. But I am happy to be corrected I wondered if it was anything to do with the external oil cooler that was fitted to the 1.9 Regarding the gear, you are correct, it is simply held just by the compression of the adjoining bits once you torque up the crank pully bolt. Seems a bit odd to me, but perhaps there is good reason for it. I have seen engines where this is pulley is driven by means of a woodruff key in the crank, seems a lot more obvious, why that wasn't continued, I dont know. I made the mistake of starting mine up once before I tightenend the crank pulley up, I think it was after I'd done the cam belt or something. For a few seconds, I wondered why the oil pressure needle was flicking up and down randomly, then I realised the oil pump wasn't getting a good drive - d'oh Fortuanatly no lasting damage was done
