Matt Holley 11 Posted April 18, 2008 I recently bought some bilstien coilovers with 180lb 9'' springs, I rushed when I got home to fit them ready for combe tomorrow and now I wish I hadnt bothered On the lowest I can get them I can get nearly all my hand in between the wheel and arch, so I have a bit of a problem, do I take it to combe and try and fit some new springs there? ( merlins sell springs) if so how long should I go for? or just leave it at home and worry about it later. Has anyone tried changing the springs by taking out the top mounts with the strut still in the hub, I think the spring might go through the strut top hole but would be good to know if anyone has done it before. Thanks matt
smighall 1 Posted April 19, 2008 I run 7" springs on mine. And yes you can drop them through from the top mount holes
Sandy 191 Posted April 19, 2008 Don't worry about them being loose in the cups either.
taylorspug 7 Posted April 19, 2008 (edited) Until you need to MOT it.... Get some helper spring too, saves you th bother of having to take it apart again. Edited April 19, 2008 by taylorspug
Matt Holley 11 Posted April 19, 2008 Problem solved I took it to combe today and in between to rain showers swapped them for 7inch springs as I thought it needed to go down 2 inches, when I got the old springs out it turned out the springs that I have been sold as 9in were in fact 10in no wonder it sat so high. AdamP 0 Posted April 19, 2008 That's the joys of coilovers! 180lb a bit soft on track though?
smighall 1 Posted April 19, 2008 Mine passed MOT without helper springs, as the top mount has a cone shape which makes sure the springs sit properly.
christopher 5 1 Cars Posted April 19, 2008 Mine passed MOT without helper springs, as the top mount has a cone shape which makes sure the springs sit properly. Hmm what do you mean by this? Is it difficult to pass MOT with coilovers? Why is that?
Rom 0 Posted April 20, 2008 Coilovers with short springs can suffer liek standard shocks with lowerign springs. When vehicle is raised, the spring isnt always long enough to remain properly seated. Thus it can be failed on an mot for insecure spring. A helper spring is much smaller than a main, helps keep the spring seated when unsprung.
