[drag_prep] 205 Project - 8 Years In The Making

Recommended Posts

Guest Oyama

Here I'll tell you about a car project that has a fair bit of history. It's not mine, it's a mates but I've been involved in it preety much all the time since it started. I hope you exuse me cos I have quite a few pics and some of them are probably bigger than the forum allowes. :)

It all started in the year 2000 , my mate has always been manic abaoy 205's since he saw the first one as a kid. He always dreamth of owning one and his dream became real on the 1st of august 2000. Now firstly you must know that back then there was an economic crisis in my country and nobody had no money for anything (not that we have any now, but back then was realy bad) So anyway - a guy from the family was in austria and found the little bugger in a srap heap - he bought it for 100 euro and brought it here for my mate - it was a 1.6 XS 89 коня 1993г. Suposedly it wasnt in a very good condition being from a srap heap an all but that wasn't important since the foundation had beel laid. Sadly i dont have a pic from the car when it first came here but i't wasnt preety. When the car was fixed enough to get on the road my mate was only left with 5 euro so couldn't put gas in so he just watched it from his window being the happiest man on earth. He then started a job (note the sallary he and most of us young guys make here is 250 euros a month - gas still costs more than one euro per liter) he started putting all his money in the car - soon it had bumpers spoiler remus etc... I know it looks corny but back in 2001 the fast and the urious had just come out and stuff like that was really respected here when everyone else drove golfs and ladas and street racing exploded (thousands of cars have been showing up at undergound meets B))

we were really proud of the grill here - no one EVER had one like it

000016249.jpg

It was good while it lasted but it was time to get mooving for a more serious visual modification - at the time one of the first tuning shows in bulgaria was commin and we were goin to compete with lambos and tech art porches :D

Time went buy, hudreds of nights spent in street racing went past but then the proffesional drag racing championships were picking up speed and we wern't going to let them pass. It was time to go FAST!

The year 2006 - our goal was somewhere like 150-160 hp. With some saved cash we bought a 1.9 GTI - the weaker one - 105 hp. The cheap ass tuning opion was dual carbs -I found a set of Webers from an old rally driver and we took the jump. New 4-1 exhaust manifold, 63mm exhaust , new fuel pump, bigger fuel lines, brakes , fat springs and much more. Engine got a ported and polished head "made in kitchen"

So the long story cut short - we assembled the car all by ourselves - we had no money left for mechanics and carb set up so everything was made in his dads garage. We started the car and it just exploded with power. A lot af races went but the most importand one was just around the corner - back then there was a lot of talk abaout the all fastest 205 in Bulgaria - a mi16 conversion - however no one knew about our little beast yet. We spotted it by suprise in our neghbourhood (the car was from a far away town) and quickly set up the race. He agreed but couldnt stop laughing cos the mi16 has cams and stuff innit... we blasted him.

pejo4hz6.th.jpgpejo2smallua2.th.jpg

So time for the big drag race - we really believed in our tunning capabillities so we got cracking - we had MAJOr carburater trouble - just couldn't get the right mixture on all 4. But any way we striped the car and put lightweight doors , hoods etc...

photo0489kj4.th.jpgphoto0490ka8.th.jpg

The day of the race we fu-ed up the fueling preety bad but that wasnt the biggest problem - the first opponent in the grid was also the fastest - a GSi opel astra stripped to nothing with a 100s shot of nos and overnight parts from japan. You can guess what happend... the car was grounded and for a short while my mate had no money to fix it so the car wasn't drivven for 5-6 months.

Because of the badly running engine the car was put in a garage all winter but my mate bought her a little brother at least to keep her company

http://img126.imageshack.us/img126/1143/08052007002ay4.jpg

We have a mountain very close to Sofia which has some terrific bendy roads which get verry snowy and it was time for some snow acton for the blue beast and my sunny which i had back then. We spent the winter drifting and doing stupid things...

But we couldt look at the red car anymore being covered in cobwebs so we got it a new engine so it could run like all the other cars. A stock 1.9 gti - this one was the better one 120 hp - we stuck with the stock injection on this one - the idea was to be able to drive around town with it - the cult phrase was heard - "i'm not going to do any modification on this one" and an even better one "I'm not going to race with this one EVAR!" hahaha

The change was easy my mate had gotten used to it...

And later that summer

http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/9894/26062007001bh6.jpg[/img]http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/6513/26062007005kr1.jpg

a strut brace - also from the well known manufacturer "made in kitchen" :)

http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/9968/26062007002id6.jpg

and a nice thing

http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/668/img0471rq8.jpg

So we heard the "I'm not moding this one" think again Santa brought gifts this year Brand new megasquirt 2.2 stand alone ECU , a new wiring , tps, 330cc injectors and 42mm ITBs from a hayabusa turbo , innovate motorsport wideband AFR controller and gauge , a big chinese fuel pump ,custom fuel cell, fpr and much more lesser things...

http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/4382/30012008002bp4.jpg

http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/2047/30012008005xr6.jpg

Due to the no money factor the parts stood on the shelf for a few monts and no work was done until last month when we got cracking. Sadly my mate was forced to sell the new alloys for half the price but thats life - with the money I found him this.

Two weeks ago we drove the car a little \again havent been driven for 4-5 months\ and broke the gearbox - but no worry - gearbox down - fix (in kitchen) - and gearbox back in the car for less than 6 hours .:eek::eek:

http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/9498/28022008ms9.jpg

http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/7269/280220083so9.jpg

NOTHING scares us now!

megasqirt install quide in 5 easy steps

1 - Old wiring cut with teh big knife and thrown in the bin

http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/1012/photo0070bv9.jpg

2 -In a carefully organised space a new wiring is being crafted (dont worry thats not the kitchen)

http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/1122/jicaux3.jpg

3 - Ready

http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/3946/harnesssj3.jpg

4 - Oohhh shiny things

http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/7929/innouf1.jpg

5 - Then some fuel maps need to be sorted that we dont understand really

http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/2179/mapwe0.jpg

http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/5096/simusm2.jpg

With a little bit of tinkering the car STARTED! Completely on megasquirt fuel and spark controll - and not just started but started revving and blasting with no problems :) Sandly the brand new AFR controller malfunctioned :confused::confused: thats 250 euro in the bin

Did I mention weightless Plasticks gaskets rubishe... - 10 kg

http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/4486/28032008004zb3.jpg

tins bolts metals 10kg , the paint is also heavy :) :wack:

http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/4246/28032008005ol2.jpg

Now its time for a new wiring for the rest of the car - guess what we dont need the cable thats for the little light in the button for the foglights of the 8 cables going to the overhead light....

http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/3198/30032008001bw0.jpg

http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/1630/30032008003uy9.jpg

And some FIA goodness :D

that's a great story and not the first case of going from styling to drag racing :).

but please follow the image posting guidelines, especially when you KNOW that images are too large!

Cool project.

I guess the police turn a blind eye to street racing over there!

Where as over here I once got a ticket for excessive acceleration, PMSL!

Yes I know and I'm sorry but they were automaticaly resised so i thought there's no prob :) .

Police always shows up at street meets but they can't do anything about it really - they can't give us a ticket for speeding without the trafic radar - and they can't charge us just for gathering in the street. The drag championship is a different story - it's a highly organised event with lots of sponsors and local mod garages involved - even when we had the carbs 3 years ago it was hard to compete and now it's almost pointless givven the average lowest class cars do low 12's on the strip :( . Now with the final suspension and incoming brake mods were hoping to compete in a small track event organised by peugeot club bulgaria (there are only 2 other 205s like this with ITBs and a couple more mi16s... and the rest are stock gti's )

These are the latest pics - the interior is almost perfect - just need some sheet door cards and probably a cage.

http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/9941/12042008sy9.jpg

http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/9803/12042008005dg3.jpg

Here we're thinking of doing a 4-eyed headlight conversion but because we can't fid original 4-eyes or because they're too expencive we're wondering how we can make em on our own - I got the idea of using 4 lights from a bmw e-30 and encasing them in a clay mold and then making a cast from fibreglass...

it's the filesize limit that's more imporant :).

in the last photo, the car looks more like a modded Kadett GSi than a 205 B).

i've also had an idea of using E36 BMW headlight units, many years ago, so i'm interested to see it done.
