anderoo 0 Posted April 17, 2008 I've got a whine coming from the gearbox which gets higher pitched as speed rises. The box was rebuilt to a 1.9 with a 1.6 FD by the previous owner. Is there anyway of telling which part of the box is whining? After reading the LSD article on here I was thinking of replacing the diff bearings as a comparatively cheap stab at trying to sort it before considering sending it to an expert. The guide doesn't mention having to shim the diff bearings, however I'm told that usually the bearings are tapered so you have to position them correctly to ensure the correct preload? Grateful for any info on this! Thanks. Andrew
suth82 0 Posted April 17, 2008 The whine could be any of the bearings in the box, is there anything which makes you think it will be the diff bearings? Changing the diff bearings is easy enough but you may need shims, However i've just fitted an LSD and new bearings and actually had to do the complete opposite and shave a bit fron the extension housing in order to get the correct preload on the bearings. All you have to do is drift (or press if you have one) the new bearings onto the diff and sit it into the housings, place the cover on with bolts finger tight, put a large shim say 2mm into the extension housing end and slowly tighten the extension housing bolts until the crownwheel just starts to drag. Remove the extension housing and measure the distance to the bearing (A) and the size of the lip on the extension housing (. A-B+0.1mm = size of shim required. Think thats about right! guru's please correct me if im wrong!
