Upgrading Brake System

Hey guys,

 

I am looking to upgrade my brake system to 306 gti6 brakes at the front, 406 Master Cylinder and braided lines to all the calipers from the M/C.

 

My car has factory fitted ABS as standard and when i was buying the bits for it I was going to keep the ABS system. But have decided to remove it and just run the lines as a standard system. So now i have a 406 Master cylinder off a ABS model.

 

My question is that can i use the 406 ABS M/C on a system without ABS? My standard 205 system has 2 lines coming out of the M/C to the ABS unit and iirc 3 lines coming out of that - 1 to the back which tee's off to the rear calipers through a compensator and 2 lines to the front calipers.

 

The 406 M/C i have has 4 outlets on it. Does anyone know if these 4 usually go out to a ABS unit then 4 lines out of that to each corner? Can i just get a braided line from each outlet to each corner without an ABS unit?

 

Or should i just flog this M/C and source a 406 non-ABS one?

What you need to do is get hold of a T piece.

 

And then run the system like this:

I dont know why the MC is split with one front brake and one rear brake but thats the way my car is setup. The rear T Piece could be your compensator so you could incorporate that in one unit instead of the two in my diagram.

 

Or you could use a Bias valve and remove the compensator completely. Thats what I have done with my brake setup.

If i have 306 gti6 brakes up front i can get rid of the compensator from the back right? Or should i just leave it in..?

You should leave the compensator in line otherwise the rear brakes will be too powerful and the first time under heavy braking the rears will lock up send you into a spin.

On our race car we run virtually no rear brakes at all, When we raced mini's we did run 1% to the rears for the handbrake!!!

No, no, no, no.... don't run the system as shown in that diagram. It shows the front and back halves of the MC connected together which means you have no redundancy should one half of the MC fail and you'll die horribly.

 

Connect each front brake to one port of either the front or rear half of the MC. Then block one port of the other half of the MC (you can get screw-in plugs to do that), and connect the rear brakes (connected through a T-piece) to the remaining port. That way front and rear brakes are on seperate circuits and you won't die horribly.

 

There's another thread somewhere on here at the moment about the need for a rear compensator with big front brakes. Personally I reckon you'll be ok without, but it's probably worth fitting one for that extra bit of adjustability and peace of mind.
