Des Developments Competition Exhausts

Recommended Posts

Chris H

I'm looking for a decent exhaust system for my MI16 powered 205 stage car and i have seen a few posts recommending the Des Developments items (although i can't find anything on a search)

Have any of you got them? I've got a maniflow manifold...anyone tried fitting a maniflow manifold to a des system...does it fit ok?

How noisy are they...the last thing i want is hastle from the noise test official!

Any photos would be great too.

Do the exhausts come with skids on the boxes?

I've tried email them but not had a reply and keep forgeting to call them during the day......so i'll hopefully get the info here.

Any comments welcome....or suggestions on alternatives too.

1, yes Martin Wickes and Sean McKeown both runDes exhausts and Maaniflow/longams manifolds

2, Martin's 200 odd bhp twon 45'sd Mi was tested at 88Db IIRC, let them know the spec and requirements and they'll tailor it for you.

3, think there are some on the website, a few members on here have their systems.

4. unsure, should think so as they were used on last years championship winning rallycross 205.

Neal's a busy man so a phonecall is the best way to get hold of him.

hows that? :P

I run a des exhuast mated to a maniflow downpipe, Neal at des welded it up for me or you can clamp it.

I have the 2 silencer option on mine to keep noise down. Tested at 84db at bedford with the manifold.

Previosuly had the grpN 1 silencer and tbh although it was louder standing outside the car when your inside they sound about the same, bl**dy french foil! (stipped out interior)

got great service from DES they changed it 3 times foc due to my needy reqirements :(

My old Mi16 engine was running twin 45's and std cam, thats made 88db at castle combe. I will be using the same exhaust with a new Catcam so the noise will rise but hopefully will be below 98db's. Thats with one silencer on the rear.

Just tell Des Dev your engine spec and required noise level and they will aim for that (give or take!), there are a few solutions using 1 or 2 silencers to choose from.

My standard system (avrin middle box, genuine pug back box) was 84db (static) measured at Bedford, that's with a fairly standard MI lump.

What do these Des systems cost??

My old Mi was about 93db with a std system, removed centre box and Magnex BB.

found it on PSOOC.com

The options are as follows;

GpN 2" with single 8"x4" straight through back box = £200+VAT

GpA 2 1/2" with single 8"x4" straight through back box = £220+VAT

GpA 2 1/2" with 8"x4" straight through back box and 4" round centre box = £240+VAT

price was from a year or so back so its worth a call to check what with the fluctuating price of stainless steel.

found a pic of Martins system http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v350/Mar...i16/Exhaust.jpg

and the system on a rallycross championship winning car ExhaustPic1.jpg

think the spec on the exhausts has changed a bit since that thread unless its been updated?

best to contact DES and tell them requirements.

my 84db was also with uprated cams and head + the exhuast, so nice and quiet considering. No noticible loss in power when driving, although may well record 1-2 bhp on a RR, going from 1 silencer which was shot recording 98db (des changed this foc) to a 2 silencer 84db system.

the des systems are a bit pricey at £220 plus vat

they use 2 1/4 piping and ok it maybe stainless steel

but when you are putting it on a competition car when damage and the life of the exhaust is cut

a system such as ashley at just £136 for the same size piping but ok this is a mild steel system but will give you the same performance

there's no question which i would choose

I'd go with DES as for one it'll fit, and secondly their service is superb.

Few quid extra at the beginning saves hours of bending, tweaking and welding to make some other exhausts fit (one particular manufacturers mentioned elsewhere well known for the "fit" on their products). I've tried the scrimping and saving, by buying what look like good value bits in the past - just in my experience you genuinely get what you pay for and there is nothing worse than spending time making something work/fit when it should have done in the first place! I now buy what I know will do the job first time and every time.

With your spec you also won't be wanting a grp N type spec as risk choking the top end performance.

The DES exhausts are high grade stainless, quality of bends and welding spot on, and have been tailored to suit a lot of application with proven results.

Best bet is to give Neal a call and have a chat about your application, then make up your mind.

i highly recoment the DES exhausts, had one made up for my 309 when i had it. Spoke to neil, he said he would need the car to make the exhaust to the car because they only have a jig for a 205 made up because its more popular but i said im a 5 hour drive away so he found another 309 he could use to make my exhaust on (obviously with the other customers go ahead first) and made the exhaust to my spec and sent it out in the post to me, fitted absolutly perfect and was just how i wanted it, was extremly happy with the service, chatted to neil for about 30 mins about what i wanted and pugs in general, top bloke. will deffo be using them again when the 205 is ready for its exhaust and recomend them to all other pug owners
