Gearbox Oil - Another Way To Top It Up?

Recommended Posts

westy

Hi,

A mate of mine's just had a brainwave. On his car, he can top up his gearbox oil by removing the speedo drive, and using some flexible tube to direct the oil in.

Any reason why this can't be done with a 205 gearbox? Damn sight easier if so.

Theres a hole in the top which is quite easy to get to. It's where the lift-up reverse cable goes into on the BE1, or a plastic breather plug on the BE3. It's much easier than trying to pour oil sideways through the hole in the end cover.

You still need to take the side bolt out to check the level though.

As Ryan says, that's the easiest especially if it's got an induction kit behind headlight, just make sure you know how much to put in!

you can access it right down the back of the engine, instead of having to shift all the hoses out the way. maybe it's just me

The hole is tiny. Gearbox oil is quite thick. It will take forever wont it?

I use an old Fairy bottle with the bottom cut off and connected it to length of hose pipe.

I split the other end of the hose, about 1 inch long, so the pipe can be wedged inside the filling hole.

far easier to put the car on full lock left and do it through the wheelarch, you have to take the level plug out anyway.

The way I do it is to jack the front end up on one side, take the wheel off, jack it down slightly so the car is level and

fill and check level that way, loads of room and makes the job easy :P

Thats how I do it.

I only use my fairy bottle when I'm re-using the old oil.

I'm being a bit thick. I need to top up my gearbox oil (1.9 8v BE3) and can't find a filler plug anywhere!

Tips please!

Ta,

Dan.

Pop off the front passenger wheel and look at the side of the gearbox - find a 19mm bolt on there, towards the bottom. Fill it in there, or there's a filler/breather on the top of the 'box.
