Alternator Broken And Other Woes...

Recommended Posts

Atari Boy

I need a new alternator. I am running a 1.9 8 valve converted 1.6. The alternator is a replacement I think and probably a 1.6 one. I assume I need to replace it with a 1.9 one. What should I be buying, ampage etc, would a diesel one be better still?

Where is the best place to get one from, Europarts or similar?

Recently the oil pressure light, stop light and water temperature light have been coming on whilst driving; they do not come on immediately, only once the car warms up. I thought this was just an earthling problem but I have done a search and would I be right in thinking that they could be related although the battery light does not come on.

Any ideas or advice pleeeeeeeeeeeeeese.

Nat, that would be great, thank you, even if it confirms that I need a new one.

I lent my 205 to a mate a week ago as his Subaru’s engine is fcuked and he needs a car, trust me he is gutted.

Since he has borrowed it ,it has broken down twice, the heater does not work and the wipers only work on slow – it has been raining ALOT this week.

Anyway he is giving me the car back as it is so unreliable and is going to use his dad’s Escort Finesse instead, what a snub on my poor 205.

Most 8v XU Alt's will fit even one from a PAS 405

iirc, 1.6 gti alternator is a 50 amp, and the 1.9 alternator is a 70 amp

but if your powering a lot of i.c.e, i'm sure there is an 85-90 amp available

Okay, I think I have a plan. Nat has a 1.9 alternator that I hope to sort off him, I have very little ice (original Clarion tape deck and two speakers) so I am sure that a 1.9 one will be fine.

My sump has a slight leak (could this be the cause of the dash lights coming on?) so at the same time I am going to replace the sump gasket, look over the oil pump and replace the pump spring with the ‘group a’ one. I have spare oil pressure warning light switch off a high mile 1.6, should I use this to see if it cures the problems or just get a new one from pug. Am I changing too much at once and is there something else worth doing whilst I am at it?

thanks

Jonny
