Keeping Pads After New Discs

I understand that when fitting new discs then new pads are recommended, but mine have quite a bit of pad left on them and i hate waste.

 

Surely if i got the pad ground down to an even level then when put in they will bed in like a new pad would?

 

Am i crazy to think this?

It's generally thought of as a false economy, but old pads can indeed be resurfaced and used again with new disks.

 

I hope you didn't literally mean 'grind' them though! A good rub on some rough emery paper placed on a known flat surface is enough to level them out, but bear in mind that unless you get them absolutely flat and level (almost impossible IME) then they will take longer to bed in than if you were fitting new ones.

Ahh good, I do have spare pads to go on but it seem wasteful to discard these with 3/4 of their life left, so i might give it a go then

i did this on my 106 when the discs went back under warrenty 6 months later they're still fine and get quite a lot of abuse

You can re-use the pads no probs. Unless there is something seriously wrong then the pads will be wearing flat anyway.. Not even a warped rotor could cause "uneven" pads. Sometimes one side is thicker than the other due to a sticky caliper but even there re-using them is fine.

I've read it's actually recommended to bed new discs in with old pads rather than new pads new discs, as the two need different bedding procedures.
