1.9 New Big End Bearings Re-starting Procedure After Fitting?

Recommended Posts

mojo1997

I'm in the process of fitting new big end bearings to my 1.9 8v. The car has been stood in the garage for about 2 weeks with sump/oil pump off, now that I'm ready to fit the big end bearing I was wondering if I need to pre-coat the crank with oil or anything else before I fit the new bearings.

Also when starting the car for the first time after this work I was going to remove the spark plugs and let the engine crank a few time to prime the oils system.

Does anyone have advise on if what I'm doing is correct or not??

I have searched this topic but cannot find any posts regarding priming etc.

thats what i got told by mylocal engine builder to spin it over for a short while to build up oil pressure with plugs removed. they also told my to use a red engine assembly lube when building it up. this was like a thick gluey type oil. no problems with mine so far

First question, have you had the crank journals measured to make sure they are the right size still? If an engine has been knocking 9 times out of 10 the crank will need grinding in my experience.

If the above is OK, I use Graphogen assembly paste on the bearing shells, ONLY the side that faces the crankshaft, the side that fits against the rod bore MUST be spotlessly clean and dry.

Once it is all back together then as you say you need to prime the oil system. This assumes you have changed the filter and used new oil. Disconnect the ignition system and whip the plugs out. Then spin it over on the starter in 10sec max bursts until you see oil pressure registering on the gauge. DO NOT under ANY circumstances let it fire up and run until you have definitely established oil pressure.

After that then reconnect the ignition and fire it up, keep an eagle eye on the oil pressure gauge, and listen out of any untoward noises. If the car is labouring i.e. low uneven idle then sit it at a faster idle say 1500-2000rpm using the throttle pedal.

Once it is up to temp, take it for a gentle slow drive and listen for nasty noises. Use no more that 3500rpm, no more than 1/2 throttle to begin with.
