Rupertfinch 6 Posted April 11, 2008 £50 to get your timing belt changed by Skip Brown? Good luck with that, will you be paying in Guineas or shillings?
welshpug 1,657 Posted April 11, 2008 sounds about right if genuine quality parts are being used, you're in good hands there though, SBC have a really good reputation for their work.
Simes 248 2 Cars Posted April 11, 2008 got the car booked in at skip brown for a rolling road tune, and cam belt change, a week on monday, 45 quid plus vat for the rolling road, what will the cambelt kit and change cost? i pressumed £50 or something, my mate reckons more like £300, surely not? A question you may have wanted to ask them really!! Cambelt is about £15 for the part, but you may also want to renew the tensioners and while you're there get the water pump changed. SBC know what there are doing, you've probably gone to one of the best places in the country. I'd say £300 for that but otherwise £15 + 2 hours labour max. M@tt 77 Posted April 11, 2008 (edited) looking at a couple of hours work (2hrs) for some one experienced on a 205 cambelt change plus a new belt(£15) plus might be worth while doing waterpump and tensioners whilst your at it seeing as the belt is off but think there about 30 a piece each (check gsf prices for a idea) EDIT: ^^^^^ what he said Edited April 11, 2008 by M@tt
bill 0 Posted April 11, 2008 holy s*it! oh well like you say its in good hands i suppose, better to be safe than sorry, the cars been stood for a good 6 months and hardly had any use for a year and a half before that, so i'm a bit concerned the belt may have detiorated in this time. Tom Fenton 1,541 Posted April 11, 2008 I'd imagine somewhere like Skip Browns will be charging at least £40 per hour labour, if not more. However this is the price you pay for it being in safe hands! I personally do all the work on my cars myself, but if I were ever to take one somewhere, I'd definitely want some idea of price before agreeing to ork being done. M@tt 77 Posted April 11, 2008 how are you with the spanners? is it not something you could hadve a go at yourself? its a bit fiddly if you've not done it before it can take a while the first time but its not too hard. good opertunity to get your hands dirty and save some cash. get yourself a haynes manual and follow that
jord294 92 Posted April 11, 2008 your in good hands with skip brown paul, who does the work, is very thorough. he'll tell you exactly any problems the car might have on the rolling road. as for cambelt cost. be prepared to pay roughly £27 for the cambelt, and £90 fixed charge, for doing it. expect to pay more if you have asked for water pump and tensioner also
Coonper 0 Posted April 11, 2008 Dont you have to drop the engine to change the cambelt?
richsmells 2 Posted April 11, 2008 Dont you have to drop the engine to change the cambelt? No. The 205's nice and easy to work on.
Coonper 0 Posted April 11, 2008 Are we talking 16v or 8v here?
M@tt 77 Posted April 11, 2008 dont have to do it for either. I've just done the belt on my mi16 this past weekend when i fitted my cam. The back tensioner is the hardest bit to do but just get a sump plug key in the square hole push it up really hard with a large spanner and tighten the retaining boltwith a 13mm spanner at the same time. Tom Fenton 1,541 Posted April 12, 2008 I actually find the Mi cambelt easier to do than the 8v one.
Super Josh 4 Posted April 12, 2008 I actually find the Mi cambelt easier to do than the 8v one. Other way round for me. Find the 8V soooo easy, but the Mi is a right PITA. Maybe my hands are too big? Although it's like anything, once you've done it once. The second time is easy Which I found out when fitting mine as I got the waterpump gasket trapped and it didn't seal properly. Water pissed everywhere and it only took a little while to turn it all around again. Josh
