Urgent Help Required - Gti6 Dampers

Recommended Posts

Furiousd

Hi

I've purchased some 306 gti6 dampers from someone on here, just had them fitted to the car at a garage and the mechanic has told me that the wheel only turns one way. He says the pas side one looks ok and turns as normal but the drivers side is hitting the inside of the arch.

His assumption is that I've been sent 2 passenger side dampers, or there is a difference between the 306 and the 205 which is causing the issue.

Can someone please confirm if this is correct? And advise best course of action?

As this is my daily drive and I'm without a car I'm looking to get this sorted asap!

Many thanks

Chris

sounds like the steering rack isn't centred properly, check that both trackrod ends are of equal length, mine has been set correctly and its still very close on both sides.

So there's no way it could be 2 left hand dampers or an incorrect part?

Many thanks for the quick response I'll give the garage a call now and ask him to check the steering rack.

Have you got 306 dampers? I was told they'd got straight on but is there less tolerance on the positioning of the steering rack?

you can tell if there is a left and right by looking at the offset on the drop link brackets compared with the hub alingment notch. In the past i have bolted the drop link to the dampers from the other side as the drop link bracket is positioned differently on the gti6 dampers

Thanks, the car is at a garage who are quering this so I'll have to relay the info on to them and see if it makes sense? He's told me that the 2 dampers appear identical and that the old damper that came off angles away from the wing which is why he thinks they may be 2 left hand ones.

Would you suggest this is not the case?

Just to add to this the springs that came on the dampers were coloured red so I assume non std and most probably off the same car. This would indicate to me that 2 dampers are the correct left and right items.

Anything else this could be if it is not the steering rack in a incorrect position?

Just to update on this, the Mechanic did fit the gti6 dampers in the end! :)

Not sure what the issue was tbh
