Clutch Cable Blues...

Recommended Posts

adrian_gti

hey guys and gals... this problem has been with me since putting the TD gearbox in. Heres some info on the car.

1.9 TT. Phase 1.5 interior (grey).

Gear stick is lift up reverse

The garage managed to put a TD gearbox on the car last year. I was able to put it in reverse keeping the current lift up but obviously now reverse is behind 5th.

The clutch cable has gone and the garage (new mechanic) does not want to put the same model cable back on as it was never done properly and it's the cable that probably caused the clutch to slip.

I've gone out and bought all the clutch cables available but none fit properly.

Could it be the pedals as I expect the TD being from a newer car would be different to my current pedal? Luckily I do have a STDT here so will happily take the clutch and break pedal out to get my dimma back on the road... but didnt want to do it if it's deffo not the pedal.

To the conversion properly should I have taken the gearbox, pedals and gear stick aswell as the linkages from a TD / STDT? All I have so far is the gearbox.

Also how easy is it to take the pedals off the STDT? Is anyone able to do a short "How To" or does the book of lies already have one? If so I'll go out and buy it.

Cheers for the help as always!

depends on the bellhousing of the TD box, but you may well be able to bolt all the BE1 release mechanism onto it and use the original cable.

much easier than changing the pedal box.

oh I thought both my old 1.9 gearbox and the TD box was BE3? I dont even know what a bellhousing is though

Your old gearbox (along with pedal and cable) was BE1 and the new gearbox is BE3

Easiest solution is to swap the clutch pedal for a BE3 item, and then run a standard BE3 clutch cable. Pedal is the same on any BE3 205/309, and it's just a single 16mm nut and bolt that secures it to the pedal box - work upside down in the footwell and you'll see it.

The easiest way is going to be to get a clutch pedal from a BE3 car.

That way the later BE3 clutch cable should be a direct fit.

No need to swap the whole pedal box, just one bolt through the pedal is all.
