Head Gasket Job Done

Ok i had my head gasket done this week by the top guy on the 306 Gti-6 forums who lives very local to me so it was convenient.

 

I collected the car this evening and he mentions that although the job went very well, i now have a slight misfire at low revs.He suspects this is the fault of the dizzy as it appeared to not be in good nick.

 

My first point is that it had been fine before the head gasket job, so i have my doubts.He also said he has turned down my idle as it was a little too high,but i have always had a perfect 950 rpm idle which was rock solid and never hunted.Now it is idling at 750rpm and it hunts.The 'misfire' shows itself if you try and accelerate from idle quickly, it sort of stutters and then 'clears its throat' and is fine.I never had any of that before. The last factor is that in driving it down to him i ran out of fuel and it chugged to a halt, so i am obviously wondering if that has contributed.

 

I have had all Peugeot parts for the job and also changed to semi synthetic oil.

 

So my question is, what might have gone wrong to produce these symptoms?

 

Before, although my head gasket was on its way out, i had a rock solid idle and it accelerated cleanly and with no hesitation.Now it has a lower, hunting idle and accelerates with a stutter.

 

I have now put plenty of fuel in and wonder if it needs a good run to clear out any problems that might have occured from running out of fuel.I will buy the new dizzy as he suggested and hope it is that, but i just cant see why it would be like that after but not before.

 

Any help or suggestions would be gratefully received.

Well :blush: new dizzy cost arm and a leg :o so id skip that route until all other fixing/adjusting options run out ..

 

Sounds like he didn't adjust the ignition timing properly (if it was fine before...) , just fill the car with petrol take the spanners with you and go for a spin and adjust the dizzy "on the road" by yourself by ear/feel .. "on the road" ignition timing adjustment procedure has already been discussed here before a few times (not so long ago ..)

Try adjusting the idle speed back up to 950rpm. Dizzy cap and arm sould only be about £25 not the end of the world.

New dizzy and rotor arm were fitted and then the idle was returned back to 950rpm and all is sorted.

 

Simple and cheap fix :mellow:
