Rough Running Td Post Injector Change

Recommended Posts

TaylorsTDGTI

Hi Guys

Bad week, both 205's playing up. This time its the Turbo Diesel..

Changed the injectors and glow plugs over on my TD a few days ago, but since ive noticed poor off boost performance, hesitant on boost performance, high fuel consumption and dirty diesel smokey exhaust when under load. The injectors are new and the correct type, and were torqued correctly. No apparent fuel leaks either, can anyone give me any pearls of wisdom before i put the old ones back in, or start paying money for diesel specialists.

Thanks

James

Could you have fitted XU9 injectors by mistake? Hence it would be overfuelling? Not sure if there is a difference.

They were for an XUD9, i realised there is a 150cc difference between the 7 and the 9 but the injector place listed them as the same item. I think all the fuelling characteristics of the mechanical XUD engines is managed at the pump. Can anyone confirm?

Again any thoughts appreciated.

According to autodata, XUD7 and XUD9 injectors have different opening pressures, so maybe they are not the same, would be worth phoning a few places and seeing if everyone lists the same ones, imho.

It sounds like its just running a bit rich, did you replace the copper washer and fire washer?

I'd be temped to have a little tweak of the max fuel and compensator settings (back both down a touch)

Are you running Bosch or Lucas pump + injectors? (are the injectors the same type as the old? i.e it should be Bosch Injector + Bosch Pump or Lucas+Lucas

According to Servicebox the injector itself and the spring inside are the same for the Bosch systems, I haven't checked the Lucas ones.

XUD7TE and XUD9 have the same injector opening pressures (130bar) XUD9TE run higher (175 bar)

Hi Guys,

I replaced Bosch for Bosch, but you are quite right, the old injectors were 130bar rated and the new ones are 175bar rated (I should of read the numbers before fitting). Im fitting a front mounted intercooler this week and a Garret T2 instead of the KKK so im going to have to adjust all the fueling settings anyhow. Will see how that pans out, worst case, the old injectors will have to go back in.

A little update though, i twisted the pump (advanced by about 1 degree) and its running a lot better already. Still a little sluggish off boost, but when the boost comes in its a lot better.

When i noticed the poor mpg consumption i did have a full car and an external bike rack with two mountain bikes on & the auto adjusters on the rear drums are off at the moment causing a few rare occurances of sticky rear brakes, so maybe this can be put down as a cause too? I wouldnt say the 205 was that aerodynamic in the first place, but speaking to friends they have said bikes racks and alike can cause noticable drops in economy, has anyone else suffered something like this?

Thank you for your kind replies, i really couldnt do a lot of the work myself without the knowledge of people on here.

James

sounds like you need to get the right injectors installed, or speak to a diesel tuning specialist (like Derv doctor) to see if its possible to make it run well on injectors with that much of a difference in the opening pressure.

you may need to use a Bosch fuel pump from an XUD9 to match the injectors and turn it down.
