Coonper 0 Posted April 9, 2008 What do you think? If i was to weld it the back up solid, how would it handle? Or wouldnt it?
Tom Fenton 1,541 Posted April 9, 2008 In a straight line it would be OK although bumpy. Corners would be a waste of time. Spoken from experience of a drag racing Mini.
Coonper 0 Posted April 9, 2008 In what way would the handling be bad?? Every way possible?
Tom Fenton 1,541 Posted April 9, 2008 No compliance in the rear suspension making it frankly dangerous. Don't even consider it.

Rippthrough 98 Posted April 9, 2008 You've basically got and immensely high spring rate with no damping to control it, health hazard driving conditions!
Henry Yorke 269 3 Cars Posted April 9, 2008 What would happen is when you hit a bump, the rear end would lift off the ground and lose grip with the road surface. Hit a bump round a corner and there will be unplanned steering from the rear (aka Bump steer). The tyre needs to be in contact with the ground as much as possible and it is finding the balance between body roll, lowest centre of gravity and traction. base-1 17 Posted April 9, 2008 What would happen is when you hit a bump, the rear end would lift off the ground and lose grip with the road surface. Hit a bump round a corner and there will be unplanned steering from the rear (aka Bump steer). That's not what bump steer is, that's just leaving the ground as you go over a bump Bump steer is when the front (steered) wheels turn due to suspension movement, rather than driver input. Rear wheel position is fixed, and in this case there's no suspension movement at all lol Aside - yeah very dangerous, don't do it!
Batfink 201 Posted April 10, 2008 i'm sure a few of us have seized rear beams the OP could borrow lol Handling was shockingly bad.
bea5ty 0 Posted April 10, 2008 Having done last season at Harewood with a siezed beam due to not having the cash or time to replace it, I wouldn't recomend it. In the wet it was a complete nightmare, when conering a fully working car would normally roll on the suspension and then slide with no suspension movement it just slid. The handlng was quite bad but not dangrous in the dry, this was due the the track being super smooth with no bumps BUT as said before on the road with bumps it would be so dangrous. As base-1 said bump steer is when the steering is affected by the suspension movement, due to the design of the car when both sides of the the suspension go into compression or droop the toe angle changes. This is used by the manufactures so if a car has to brake suddenly the front (steered wheels) go into compression and this pushes out the toe making the car more stable and more controlable. AdamP 0 Posted April 12, 2008 I've been running my Polo with extremely stiff springs on the rear (who needs suspension movement when you can get 13x8 ET0s on the rear with 15mm arch clearance eh?). On smooth roads it feels great, but any sign of a bump and it would skip and dance! Oh and I recommend getting an LSD because you'll find it 3 wheels going over nasty camber etc I've removed those coilovers for now, will probably stick them back on for the show season though because it just looks so good
AdamP 0 Posted April 12, 2008 15mm space?! Weak Need some arch rolling and pulling! But i'm too cheap to pay for it.
richard 0 Posted April 12, 2008 Already mentioned, but if you were to use it in the wet. I hope you have some clean underwear. It will flick round on you with no warning at all.
