Will A 405 Mi16 Induction Kit Fit An Mi Engined 205?

Recommended Posts

Stu

As above peeps, does the 405 Mi induction kit 'fit' (as in is there room) an Mi engined 205? My K & N is showing its age, and id like to relocate the AFM so its straight rather than doing a 90degree before the throttle body.

So, do i either get hold of a hose that puts its straight and get hold of a generic filter to stick on the end of the AFM, or do i get an induction 'kit'?

An induction kit, any induction kit, is a waste of money, as you are paying over the odds. You can get a universal filter for not much money, and then all you need is the adaptor to fit the filter to the AFM, which in most cases you can simply use the standard plastic one that is already on the AFM (certainly that's the case on the 8vs), but if you don't have one you can get a 'top hat' adaptor from Green for a few quid. Then if you were using an 8v you'd simply need the short pipe that joins the AFM to the TB. These can be bought 2nd hand for not much money (the K&N type ones) either on here or on eBay, or you can mod the OE pipe (as per the guide on the main website)......BUT......since you are talking about an Mi16 then you don't need that pipe, you just use the original 405 pipe that locates the AFM in front of the battery.

Does all that make sense or was it just waffe? :(

Ahhh... but my AFM is at 90degrees to the throttle body..

I know there is one, do i need a BX item then?

Obviously the Mi throttle body is oval shaped, whereas the 8v is round, so the 8v induction kit adapter wont fit.

Also, all thats on the end of my AFM is approx 3-4mm of plastic that forms a square hole, the K&N has been cut and bodged to fit.

You need the induction hose from a 405 Mi16 that goes from the throttle body to the air flow meter. This hose places the AFM in a "straight line" like a 205 induction kit sits a 205 AFM. Then obvioulsy an adaptor and filter to suit. Personally for the lack of grief and pissing about trying to sort adaptors I've always just bought an induction kit, either new or second hand, but up to you. If you do buy aftermarket stuff make sure the filter you buy is big enough, the one supplied with a 405 induction kit is a lot bigger than the 205 one, probably getting on for twice the area.

Ahhhh, I see. Guess that is a BX GTi 16v set up then.

I just had a look at the Green website. They don't have an image of the kit for the BX or 405, but they do have fitting instructions, and these don't have any reference to the pipe that joins the AFM to the TB, so therefore I'd assume that the kit does not include this (which sucks if you have a BX cos you're left with the filter at the hot side of the engine). Whether a kit from another manufacturer will include this I don't know.

I see two options.

1 - Try and source a 405 Mi joiner pipe (don't know the proper name)

2 - Get a universal pipe that can be cut to length and modified etc. Green do these too, and hopefully will have something that will fit the oval TB as it's not such an unusual design.

I also have a bodged filter adaptor on my AFM. Cut down leaving a square shape that the filter does not seal properly on. Completely unacceptable on a professional installation IMO and another gripe with mine. I'll be replacing it.

If you are going to relocate the filter in front of the washer bottle I'd go for a longer but narrower diameter one, I had a K&N on mine and it wouldnt clear the washer bottle so I put the old Green one. Another thing you'll need to consider is relocating the power distrubution unit on the slam panel, this has been covered a few times.

A trick I've used on a couple of Mi 205's is to move the washer bottle back hard against the turret. Get rid of the bracket that goes from the washer bottle rear mount up the strut top, then move the bottle back as far as it will go, then secure the rear of it with a pop rivet through the turret, and then drill a new hole for the front mount in the inner wing. You gain enough for a 405 Mi induction kit filter to fit in there.

Thats correct, I have no idea what the one in the pic above is but its not off a BX 16v.

Yeah, its a proper odd ball pipe, but it fits, i really want the short straight one, am i right in saying i need a 405 one then?

Anybody got one for sale!?

I think the filter at the mo is a little restrictive, so moving it and upsizing is the order of the day.

That could be the intake pipe from a 309 GTi16 as I was going to do that one mine with the 8v airbox etc for the factory look.
