2.0 Mi16 Wont Idle

Right I have a 2.0 Iron Mi16 on a 1.9 inlet manifold and 8v management. I know its not ideal before anyone says and I'll get it on Mi management at some point but for now I'd like to get it running right as it is.

 

The problem is that it struggles to start, it can take a good 10-15 seconds over it turn over and splutering a bit and eventually it goes. When it does start it wont idle properly I can get it to idle fine at about 2k and it drives fine and pulls really well. But if I try to get it to idle any lower it'll cut out then really struggle to start. Can anyone suggest anything? Am I missing something completely obvious? There doesn't appear to be and idle screw like on the 8v TB or is there and I've just missed it? I've tried adjusting the dizzy timing which will lower the idle a bit but doesn't help with the starting problem.

 

Please help I've run out of ides :wub:

when you say it won't idle can you describe exactly what you mean? my old one took a few turns from cold, and then needed a touch of throttle for the first 5-10 seconds, once past that it would idle stabley.

 

With my old one on 8v management.. the vacum advance had gone on the distributor, this made it idle lumpily but not badly, simply remove the vac advance and suck on it if there is no resistance and air passes, the diaphram is dead. You'll still be using the SAD to bleed air in and get it to idle, check the SAD is clean inside, free of deposits and gunk, also check the breathers for gunk and leaks whilst your there, then go for air leaks on the main trunking after the afm. Also the adjuster screw on the afm will affect fueling across the rev range, not just idle like the MI one. there is a good chapter on it in the haynes, takes some time to go through the checks but is well worth it.

Where did you run to pipe from the vac advance on the dizzy to? Mines not connected as I cant find anywhere to run it to.

Just a thought, if the cam timing is out a tooth would that cause these symptoms? I fitted a new belt before the engine went in and I'm pretty sure it was bob on but I can't be certain.

To be honest I think its a real mismatch with an old fashioned injection system trying to control an engine it wasn't designed for.

Personally I'd take the plunge now and rip all the 8v sh1te out and fit the proper Mi management rather than spend time and effort trying to make the poor solution work after a fashion.

Totally agree.

 

Sounds like more hastle than its worth running on the old s*ite.

Apparently I can run the 1.9 management but I need a 1.9 inlet cam to run the rotor arm. Anyone got a 1.9 inlet cam spare?

anywhere on the inlet manifold after the throttle butterfly, i think mine had a t piece running from another vac hose.

 

You should be able to get it running ok, but like the others say 16v management is far superior
