Cti Rear Window

Recommended Posts

steve@cornwall

Well, it was quite cold yesterday, but the sun was shining so I took the CTI for a topless blast. All seemed good until I got home and raised the roof (in more ways than one) 2 cracks from top to bottom :)

Never mind, I thought, I have a spare. Of course, the pitch of the zip teeth was different so I had to strip the rear of the roof to change zips too. Luckily the hood frame is mint underneath, so no hidden horrors. Plenty of warm water made the new window very flexible so I straightened it out carefully and fitted it -so far , so good. Then I raised the roof fully again................. BANG! the vinyl at the bottom of my precious window split from end to bloody end - (By this time I was fitting it outside in rain and snow) :):( :( :( :(

The poor CTI is now sitting with it's rear window lagged in parcel tape (!!!) waiting for a new section to arrive. At least I should have a nice clear view to the rear now.

So if your window is getting on a bit, be careful if you're thinking of enjoying the sunshine at the minute

I'll let you know what the rear window is like when it arrives

yep thats all fun isnt it steve! :)

Had that before on my previous roof, decided to get a whole new one as trying to match up the zips was a pain. Although when i did mine, the rear bar that the hood clips around was rusted right through, was like they missed rust proofing on it in the factory or didnt bother. £130+ vat later i had a new one! Bloody stealers :) !

worth noting if you do get a new rear window to really take care of it, putting it up and down, watching for finger nails, rough skin and if the missus is doing it, her bloody rings!! If not renvo plastic window polish cleans it up very well!!

I did the same on my old CTI some years ago. Had it changed at a place called softtops in coventry. He said that if you lower the window when the temp is below 5c there is a chance it will break. As a rule afterwards i never lowered it if it was a bit cool just in case.

All great fun! the roof and window were from my old cti and luckily when I changed it over a couple of years ago, I replaced that bar with a good one I had. Only problem now is the o/s stiffener is showing signs of rust, so that will need to be replaced, too.

Just had a reply from BAS about which zip they use (luckily I have one of each type anyway) but apparently it comes with a complete zip anyway (makes sense, but you never know). I'm also going to see if a local company can stitch in a new, lighter gauge window into my remaining good panel for future use.

Cheers for the renvo tip, is it generally available?

Just noticed that- the thought of my other half doing anything other than sitting in a car made me chuckle!!! - she helped me t-cut an escort in "88 and has refused to do anything automotive since    (although she did hang curtains in the old camper)

It arrived yesterday and was fitted today. Rain stopped play, so it needs lining up at the bottom properly. I'm impressed with it. Quality is above OE (IMO) as it lines up better inside and out. Both parts of the zip must be fitted as the pitch of teeth is different to the pug fitment (quality YKK zipper) which may be a problem if your retainer is rusty as most will be. I fitted with new stainless c/s screws and nuts and will run a covering of vaseline either side of the zip for protection against the damp. Service was good, too with the office tracking delivery on request as the delivery terms weren't published on order. I would recommend tis one seeing out of a clear CTI window is amazing! I thought the old one was ok but the new one is 1000% better.

Cap't P do you still have a part no. for an o/s stiffener as I need to replace mine - this is getting expensive by my standards :)

Hi Steve,

Good to see your getting it sorted, felt sorry for you when I read your post. Thats handy information as although I changed my roof, I kept the original rear window and I'm not sure how long it will last, I need to find my bottle of that stuff that cleans the perspex as I can see sod all out of it at the moment!

Phil

Interested in this plastic cleaner myself as mine is a little milky. I was thinking of getting a new piece stitched in by a sail maker
