A Few Engine Rebuild Questions….

Recommended Posts

skinner2k3

If the crank bearing surfaces (not the journals themselves) look undamaged and measure within tolerance can a standard set of new bearings (big and little end) be ordered, or are they only supplied with a regrind?

Is it possible to do a compression check on an engine out of the car with no gearbox or starter attached?

Will a 1900 clutch fit a 1600 fly wheel?

Anyone got any ideas for getting the treaded part of a spark plug out of a cylinder head having sheared off the hex and core?

Excuse any stupid questions, havent rebuilt an engine before.

Cheers

Ben

a) yes you can get a standard set of bearings

:) No i don't think so you need to turn the engine over at a reasonable rate(certainly quicker than by hand) and you'll need gearbox on to mount starter properly

c) yes flywheels and clutches are the same

d) you'll need to take it to a machine shop and get them to drill it out and helicoil or retap the thread

Thats good then. I know of a local machine shop that will probably be able to get the spark plug remains out and supply the bearings.

I do have a gearbox in the garage and a XU10 starter I intend to use anyway so I will get that bolted together to turn it over. I thought there may have been a leak down test that could be done statically.

Cheers

Another question...

Which parts have to stay together and which can be mixed and matched?

I have a complete 1900 engine in the car and running with good oil pressure, new head gasket, water pump belt and had a complete service last year. Miles heard this one running last year and IIFC believed the bottom end rattle sounded a bit big end like.

But in the garage I have another complete runner, 2 spare blocks (1 x 1900 and 1 x 1600) and 3 spare cylinder heads. Its out of this lot I would like to build up a good engine to replace mine if/when it sh*ts itself.

I am sure I have enough bits to find a good example of each part required but dont know what can be mixed. I will fit new bearings as a matter of course so can I use which ever are best?

If you have the gear available, you can do a leakdown test on a static engine. A useful guide to the sealing properties.
