Gti-6 Gearbox On Standard 205 1.9 Engine

Recommended Posts

Hi talking to one of the guys at work who is also a lover of 205's and he was telling me that the GTI-6 gear box can be put onto a standard 205 1.9 engine with little hassle, i was wondering if this was true and if so what changes in characteristics would this make in acceleration and top end if any, or am i just having my chain yanked hear haha

thanks jean

Will bolt straight on, you'll need to swap the pull clutch arm to a push, or get a 1.8 16v clutch and use a Be1 cable but the former is the easier option.

Also the selector arm nearer the flywheel needs swapping to a 205 one (requires a retaining pin to be punched out and swapped) Then lift up for reserve gear lock out and you'll be away.

You'll loose a bit of right lock (think won't be able to get round a multistory carpark without taking a wide enterance to the rights)

You gain 1.6 gearing, then the 1.9 5th on top (6th gear) so you gain an extra gear in the middle, would add acceleration, bit not top end as the gearing is the same at the top.

I believe these figures to be fairly accurate;

('box/FD)................1st-2nd-3rd-4th-5th-6th

205 GTI 1.6/1.6.......32--56--77--98--120-000

205 GTI 1.9/1.9.......39--62--85--108-132-000

mi16/mi16..............33--52--75--99--126-000

205 GTI 1.9/1.6.......36--57--77--98--120-000

GTi6.......................36--56--74--91--110--132

all @ 6200 rpm on 185/55 15"

I don't...

Top speeds are a little out IMO.

note that I calculated tham @ 6200rpm (or rather the spreadsheet did) which is the std limiter for the 1.9 IIRC, peak power is certainly at 6k, and the 132 top shown for the 1.9 box seems correct.

I wouldnt bother. Its heavy and you loose enough lock to affect daily driving.

It certainly didnt seem worth the hassle when I did the conversion on my mi16 so i sold it on.
