[car_overhaul] My 205 Gti Road Car Project

Hi everyone,

 

Thought you’d all be interested in my project car road I’ve started this week.

 

 

Details on the car:-

 

~ I am only the third owner of my C-Reg 1986 Peugeot 205 1.6 GTI

~ It was dry stored for ten years by first owner as he got married in it!

~ Due to dry storage the car is in mint condition

~ Car has done 112,000 miles

~ Car is Cherry Red

~ Bought off Ebay for £130

~ No Tax

 

 

Picked up car on Monday (31st) from a guy near Bristol and brought it back to where I work in Blackpool ( Wharton Motorsport )

It had failed its MOT a month ago on silly little things like headlight out, corroded brake lines, pads and one or two other niggly things.

 

Started working on it Tuesday the 1st at my work. Spent a whole day working on it.

 

 

The following problems where known:

 

~ Tailgate glass smashed due to the boot being closed when there was a filing cabinet being transported (previous owner)

~ Car interior soaked through due to water getting in due to above point

~ Corroded Brake lines

~ Duff brake pads

~ Bulkhead rust

~ Slightly rusty bonnet catches

~ Gear selector broke

 

 

Did the following on Tuesday the 1st:

 

~ Removed tailgate with smashed glass and took a tailgate off a donor 205 we have.

~ Cleaned up the replacement tailgate (same colour as car) which had a very chavy spoiler on it and took off ‘Kenwood’ sticker.

~ Swapped boot gas struts and replaced with some off the donor car.

~ Re-fitted rear wiper motor and wiring.

~ Ripped out all soaked interior including seats, sound deadening, carpet, boot carpet, door cards, rear cards, centre console cards, unnecessary wiring, speakers, seatbelts, seat runners, gaskets etc.

~ Wiped up all water in the interior and brushed up all glass shards.

~ Replaced orange front indicators with clear ones.

~ Cleaned up engine bay and removed all dirt and tie wraps which are everywhere.

~ Removed and inspected air filter which is goosed.

~ Removed broken front fogs.

~ Cleaned up alloy wheels.

~ Removed and re-fit grill with new bolts.

~ Removed outer trims and inspected arches all of which were in great condition apart from offside rear arch which has slight bubbling.

~ Checked fluid levels, all of which were good apart from oil which wasn’t great and was low.

~ Replaced oil dipstick with one that wasn’t broken.

~ Cleaned up all exterior paintwork and glass with t-cut.

~ Cleaned up all interior with t-cut and a general wash.

~ Company colour scheme for exterior applied.

 

 

Things planned for end result:

 

~ 306 GTI-6 engine (anyone got one for sale) with engine work (after re-build) such as cam, verniers, induction kit, engine mount, a full service, polished and ported head and all the ancillary changes to go with it.

~ ECU change (any suggestions) with limiter off and chipped.

~ 309 GTI rear beam

~ Comp brake kit (278 x 24mm)

~ Powerflex kit

~ Bilstein rear shocks

~ Lower of rear beam by 50 mm

~ Lower of front using Bilstein struts/dampers

~ Bucket seats

~ OMP Rollcage (white)

~ Rally steering wheel

~ New brake and fuel lines to run inside the car

~ 1.9 GTI wheels painted white with new tyres

~ Aluminium lower front wishbones with rose joints

~ Rose-jointed gear linkages made by a friend of mine

~ New gear selector

~ BE3 gearbox

~ Front upper, front lower strutbraces

~ New front and rear ARB

~ Phase two rear lights

~ Harnesses (red)

~ Brand new exterior trim all round painted black

~ Gutmann grill

~ Intercooler

~ Samco hosing

~ I’m sure there’s more but can’t think of any more.

~ Clear side indicators

~ New dash with all unnecessary stuff taken out.

 

 

Next work to be carried out:

 

~ Fixing / replacement off things that it failed its MOT on (quite a bit)

~ Fitting seats out of donor car

~ Getting it MOT’d

~ Sourcing rollcage

~ Take out roof sound deadening

~ Various bits and pieces

 

 

I will get some pics up when I get a chance.

I work for Wharton Motorsport in Blackpool and this is going to be my road car.

 

I’d appreciate your comments and advice on this and anything you think I could use that would be better.

S*it a brick! Where do you lot find these bargains? (I'm a twat. After copying and pasting the above and typing this comment, I then re-read it and saw the eBay comment. Duuuuuuhhhhhhhh )

 

Shame it's not being fully restored to original spec, but hey ho

~ Intercooler

 

Why? No mention of plans for forced induction above

 

Oh, and we need pics.

I would strongly advise against Aluminium wishbones on a road car, you'll probably regret it when you're upside down in a ditch.

Cheers mate, will bare it in mind.

 

 

More work done on the car today.

 

~ Replaced dizzy, rotor, oil, oil filter, plugs and car runs so much better for it.

~ Flushed the engine.

~ Replaced window and door gaskets. They still arn't right though - think they've shrunk.

~ A good wash and T-cut.

 

When first had a look at the rotor, plugs etc, they were in really bad nick.

Took it for a drive round where i work today too and i can't believe how much quicker it feels after replacing the above.

 

Next things:

 

~ New air filter, fuel filter, HT leads

~ Change brake pipes

~ Sort out Headlamp

~ Sort out MOT stuff

 

Sorry for lack of pics, i do have some just need to have camera, internet and computer all in one place lol.

 

Any more suggestions?
