What Is The Rev Range For A 1.6gti Engine

Recommended Posts

205johnnyxsi

I have a 309 xsi 1987 1.6 xsi engine same as 1.6gti engine

I brought it basically with a exhaust as far as i knew

But the Thing is it limits at 6,800k

And thought it was 6,200

Surely a exhuast dont give you 600k more revs

As said, that's about right - 1.9 8v's limited at approx 6500rpm, 1.6 8v at approx 6700rpm, and 1.9 Mi at approx 7100rpm (7400rpm for Mi4x4)

Also remember that the standard rev counter isn't the most accurate device in the world.

Indeed, all my 1.6s have shown 7K+

What about the GTi6? (as both 8v and Mi16 have been mentioned I thought it'd be rude not to have the GTi6 here as well)

I now think its about dead ... going to 7 and 7200 when its feels like its mostly when warm o well a day change the engine

That doesn't mean the engine's dead!!!

The ECU controls the rev limit. Someone may have removed the limiter by snipping a diode in the ECU. I used to trash my first 1.6 well beyond 7k and took is up to about 8k (that's indicated, so not accurate) a few times. Pointless and not healthy, but I was young and stupid.

Think its time to upgrade the engine so i have no more problems i thin

Not on a 1.6 ecu

Rev limit seems to alter with timing / condition of ignition components, so I wouldn't worry at all - just enjoy.

Only way that can really be true is if the ignition componants were faulty and holding the engine back and not letting it rev - ignition amps and occasionally coils are notorious for this kind of rev-limiter like symptom.

The actual rev limiter on the ECU is a fuel cut, and hence independant of ignition - the limiter can be removed completely by snipping a diode as mentioned, but otherwise should always be in the same place. Not to say that 205 rev counters are the most accurate things in the world mind you....

Can't argue with the physics, maybe it just INDICATES differently on the tacho?
