djinuk 2 Posted April 1, 2008 Whilst at work today i noticed that there was a puddle under my car behind my drivers side wheels, expecting a split pipe or similar i decided to take a look once home, on the journey home my water light came on to say it was low, there for i topped it up no problem. I got some, and jacked the car up, found no leaks, no split pipes etc. I started the car up, and very quickly i saw a constant trickle of water coming from the water pump area . Absolutely gutted , just wanted a few people on here to confirm my findings and tell me the water pump needs replacing. Just also wanted to ask what the normal procedure is for replacing the water pump, should i also do the cam belt at the same time?. if you look you will see the water coming from behind water pump. 205007 12 Posted April 1, 2008 (edited) the only other thing is the water distribution block in that area unlikley though best buy a cambelt and tensionner kit while your there, can only increase the value of the car and an extra few seconds to replace Edited April 1, 2008 by 205007
djinuk 2 Posted April 1, 2008 just a few questions, should i use gasket sealant on the water pump or the gasket supplied. any particular make of water pump, ? is the tensioner hard to change? My cambelt is the shorter of the 2 avalible how many teeth will it have? For when i order.
DamirGTI 342 Posted April 1, 2008 Yes , looks like the water pump is gone it's not unusual leak problem when you're changing the antifreeze or replacing the cambelt on old engine without changing the old water pump ... but as said do check the water distribution housing at the back of the engine/block cos it's near the water pump and if it's leaky it'll look similar like water pump leak .. Yes you'll need to remove the cambelt i order to replace the WP . Just don't buy cheap WP , find some decent one if you want it to last (before you buy it take it out from the box and feel it with your hands/look with your eyes - it'll be clearly obvious when you look at it if it's an good/quality WP or some rubbish "Mickey Mouse" part ) . You'll get gasket included with the new WP , carefully remove old gasket from the block surface and fit new one dry without sealant on it . The tensioner is not hard to replace .. Rgs ! 205007 12 Posted April 2, 2008 113 teeth buy a peugeot belt and tensionner kit they have a fair margin for discount so aim for 20% off to be fair damir if you dont have the two examples its unlikley how you would know what a "quality" water pump would look and feel like as opposed to a s*it one water pumps are much of a muchness if you dont want to spunk on a pug one the rest are equally bad so make your choice! in any event a cheap one is unlikley to cause you problems unless you do big miles, big rpm or fit it wrong forget the sealant just dab some grease on the gasket/clean mating face to holid in position until you get the bolts in and tighten them up alternatley like wheel bolts to remove the tensionner 2x 13mm`s on the front + there is a 16mm bolt on the backside of the block, best to use spanner as opposed to socket
Grim.Badger 15 Posted April 2, 2008 The build quality between cheap and expensive water pumps is obvious, I would spend the money and get a GSF one as they are obviously well made. The most obvious difference is the impellor, which on the GSF item is a nicely fasioned cast item whereas cheap ones just have flat peices of metal welded onto a plate which will not move the water as efficiently which could cause hot spots in the engine.
