205 Road Rally Clutch

205 1.9 gti

I've just mildly ported a head, 60 thou skim and fitting a piper 270 cam.

Thinking of lightening the flywheel and changing the clutch.

currently run a 1.6 gearbox on a 1.9 engine and use 185/60/15 (i think this size is right) A035's. Occasionally the clutch slips and smells. the clutch was recently renewed (standard LUK clutch) and the only time it slips is when i am giving the car a hard time on a rally and trying to set off at pace from controls. IT doesn't slip all the time and once i've driven along for a bit its fine again.

So i'm wondering whether to fit an

1. MI16 gearbox (to give me faster acceleration), flywheel and clutch (215mm diam as opposed to 200mm),

2. an mi16 flywheel and clutch, keeping the 1.6 box

3. Keep the orginal setup (1.6 flywheel and clutch and upgrade the clutch/clutch plate)

4. Do nothing and accept that it will slip a bit

Any suggestions? I don't have much money to spend so can't afford an off the shelf fully lightened flywheel etc!

Whatever i do i plan to lighten the mi16/1.6 flywheel before fitting it all back together. Any tips on how light to go?

I've been running a standard valeo clutch on my 185bhp MI16 stage car with no problems at all...after 3 seasons it is still mint.

I've only gone for a paddle clutch as i got one on e-bay for £15!....bargain or what!...otherwise the same cluch would be going into the new car.

I'd say save your money and use it towards a 1.9 box with a 4.4 (mi) final drive.

It sounds to me it only slips when it gets hot, and when it cools its OK again. Try removing the plastic covers on the box to let some more air in and out.

yeh think you m,ight be right. I know theres a plastic cover that you can look into to see the flywheel teeth. IS this the one you're talking about? And theres one on the bottom of the gearbox isn't there?

The clutch std euro car parts, item (Mi16), has done 2 sesons of castle coombe saloons and 3 rallys so far with no trouble, we took it out and fitted a "budget" race clutch and the pressure plate failed first race meeting!!! so back in went the old.

4.44 CWP will make a big difference as you won't need to slip the clutch to much to make a quick start. I had the same problem with a 1900 std box, need to slip the clutch too much as the gears are too long

I've been running a std valeo clutch too. 10 RRs and no problems. Got it from www.peugeotparts.co.uk for £45 (gen pug)

Got to agree with phil , try and get hold of a 4.44, although my preference would still be a 4.8 .( i will get one one day )

As for the clutch , i have always used a paddle clutch on mine, so have had very few issues. The 4.44 will help the life of the clutch to be a little easier

hey what clutch you go for after?

my 205 is being built for road rallying, and its white too! haha im just converting it to a 1.9.. im also about to build a box... its a 1.6 be3, wich is going to have the 4:4(14x62) mi16 CWP, 3rd anf 4th from the mi16 box to give it a close ratio... leavin the standard fith as you rarely need it on a night event and im thinkin of fuel eco too and from events many mountains away... and ive come to this thread on the search function, as im thinkin of a paddle clutch, or uprated as its all in bits at the moment so may as well do it in one hit as apposed to having to take it back apart.

pretty sure 3/4 from an Mi16 and 1900 box are the same. Drop me a PM and I'll send you the excel spreadsheets with gearing calculators. You won't go far wrong with 4.4 CWP/1900 gears with night events with a std genuine clutch. So long as you're not daft with spinning wheels etc! I've a helix cerametalic in my 205 at the mo (ex tar car) and when the box comes off I'll put a std clutch in it. Just nicer to use for road / roadrally use.

I bought an EBC clutch kit in the end as it came up cheap on ebay. It slipped.

Unfortunately my diff blew up yesterday into the clutch area whilst powering in first round a mini roundabout. So..... gearbox out, new pressure plate and a VALEO clutch ready to go in! Will get it sorted tonight hopefully. Better had as i have a rally on Saturday!
