Xu Flywheel Weights, Anyone Know Them?

Recommended Posts

welshpug

been trying to find out how much the 1.9 Mi flywheel I have on my 8v weighs, without much luck!

I have so far gathered that the XU5 apparently weighs 6 kg, the 1.9 8v 7kg, and the gti6 flywheel weighs 6.5 Kg.

are those figures correct?

just wondering if the 1.9 mi flywheel was heavy at all and whether an XU7 flywheel would be more beneficial (going back to a smaller clutch wouldn't hurt as its only an 8v, and they're cheaper )

I weighed a 1.6 & 1.9 flywheel on some calibrated scales when I was building the engine thats currently in my black GTi, they were definately 6 & 7kgs respectively.

I think the L&B Mi one from QEP I have fitted now weighs 5.5kgs & I've just weighed an Mi & XU7 flywheel on my bathroom scales, they both weighed pretty much the same at ~6.5kgs.

Thanks Graham, explains why it'll rev a little easier, though the half kilo difference would be lessened by the larger 1.9 Mi16 clutch assembly.

Lynx Power Engineering produce a billet steel flywheel for the gti6 and they weighs in at 3.7kgs. Not really relevant but it just shows how much lighter you can go!

Quite relevant I think, nice to know what else is out there for these engines.

Though I have heard that they aren't made from the best of materials and someone had to have theirs balanced and re-faced, just what I have heard not seen or experienced though.

7kgs would be a 1.9 Jetronic fly at a guess rather than a Motronic (with the timing ring on it). At a guess the Motronic one would be heavier (even if not it will have a larger Moment of Intertia due to the weight being on the outside edge)

Quite shockingly the motronic flywheel is the same as the one used on the XU7 which weighs ~6.5kgs afaik so the jetronic XU9JA flywheel is the heaviest of them all.

I had one which came off the 405 SRi engine I broke for my MP3.1 loom & iirc that only weighed ~7kgs boxed when I sold it.

3.4kg heh, no idea on quality but they have been around for a long time making 16v mini stuff so it should be good! Edited by VisaGTi16v
