Rust In Front Of Rear Wheel

Recommended Posts

christopher

Both my 205's suffer from a bit of rust in front of the rear wheel just above the sill in the corner,,

Question is how does the water get there? I'll try and get a picture tomorrow

quarter window seals leak, water runs down behind the card and into the void behind the panel and sits there, mine has gone rusty there, I had a poke earlier and stuck my screwdriver through the panel :)

My XS has gone there too. Luckily the RG is fine but it'll be getting fook loads of protection!

Or the seamsealer between the sill and the sidepandel cracks and lets in moisture from the outside.

Rust here seems more common on GTIs than on lesser 205s. Same with the cracks just behind the top of the B-pillar. I think it's because the stiffer suspension and higher cornering loads make an already flexible body flex more. This makes the seam sealer more likely to come away, allowing water in and rust to start.

I once read a buying guide in a French classic car magazine which specifically advised against buying a 205 with aftermarket stiffened suspension because the body was likely to be ruined. Maybe that's a bit extreme but it's true that the 205 shell isn't exactly tough. I'd rather have it that way than have it an overweight, oversize fortress like today's superminis, though.
