1.6 Gti To Gti6

Recommended Posts

I'm the very proud owner of a 88k GTI6 engine loom, bear box, and ECU.

I'm currently running a very standard 1991 1.6 GTI and this will be my first engine conversion.

I’ve tried a lot of searches but I’m not really finding all I need to know, so I’ve listed some questions below….

1. If I change to 1.9 driveshafts to fit better brakes will these fit my existing gear box?

2. Will my gear box simply bolt on to the GTI6 engine.

3. How do I unlock my ECU as its not in a car?

4. Do I need to get it remapped when using a cone filter? / Is this possible?

5. Whats all this about shorter engine mounts, extended mounts and re-angled exhaust manifolds?

6. Can I use my existing suspension (Bilstein) with uprated spings?

7. Are my new rear drums and shoes up to the job if I fit GTI6 / 4pot brakes to the front?

8. Do I need an oil cooler?

9. As an aside how long does this sort of conversion take to complete?

Apologies for all the questions!!

I’m trying to source any parts I may need prior to starting the build and gain as much knowledge as possible along the way.

I want the car to be a useable daily drive, a bit of a sleeper rather than a track car.

I don’t think I have bitten off more than I can chew, (and by that I largely mean my mate who is an engineer) but I do need a bit of guidance from some guys in the know….

Many thanks again, and apologies If I’m asking stupid questions!

Spiky

i had altered my lower mount, but put it back last week ( but only as i thought it was causing me a knock) exteneding between 0-10mm will cause you no issues jsut helps the angle the exhaust runs at

i have lowered my engine using a mk2 rs 2000 escort engine mount,

see my sig for my build

if you want a working rev counter send me a pm :)
