Baffled Sump, Oil Pressure

Recommended Posts

hodgy

ive fitted a baffled sump to my 1.9 and the oil pressure drops into the red when revs drop below 600rpm(carbs and no choke) it used to be fine till i fitted the baffles. is this normall?

im on a track day in just over a week and dont fancy blowing it up again like i did last year

well when i fitted a baffled sump to my 1900 block i also fitted a uprated oil pump spring and the pressure goes off the guage until it warms so id definitely recomend that but i dont know why urs would have dropped pressure!

The baffled sump shouldn't make any difference to the oil pressure, its simly a method to prevent excessive oil draining away from the oil pump pick up.

The oil pressure is all down to the pump, engine speed, big end & main bearings condition & availability of oil.

Is the sump made for use on an alloy XU engine or is it one from a different PSA engine? Also what type of baffle has it got fitted? (not that it should make any difference).

If the sump is from an XU10 aren't they are deeper? If so you either need to add more oil to bring it back up to the original sump level or remove the spacer / stiffener plate.

Did you use sealant to seal the sump back on again?? IF you have and got too much on there,

there is a chance you have partially blocked the oil pick-up pipe.... as it will squidge into the sump (the sealer that is)

have heard about this on other engines (namely cos YB engine) as it seems it can be done fairly easily!

whats the oil pressure like when you rev it?

i didnt seal the pump back in.didnt know i had too.

its PTS baffles ive fitted that came straight out of another 205 and i just used there sump

dont know what the pressure is at when i rev as the gauge is broken. i only know its dropped as the stop light comes up and its only done it since i fitted the baffles

Sump, not pump.

Was the donor engine the same size (1.6 or 1.9) The 1.9 has a shallower sump so if you've fitted a 1.6 sump to yours the pump pick up might not be getting enough oil.

Failing that try another stop light sender before digging to deep, a friends car had a nice oil leak down the front of the block & it was due to the low pressure stop light sender letting oil through. Nice simple 10 minute fix for once.

If all you've done is swap the same sized sump across from one engine to yours & suddenly the oil pressure has changed I'd suspect the sender first.

i used the sump that came with the baffles. i could just bang my sump back on so everyhting is the same.

when the revs pick up the light goes out so im confused without a gauge to see whats happening

Yeah but was it from a 1.6 or 1.9 engine?

Why isn't your guage working btw?

The guage light will go out when the revs rise, the oil pressure will increase.
