[engine_work] Well I've Started My Sorrento Gti6 Project

Recommended Posts

tracktoy
I used instant gasket for the inlet and think i used too much, it wouldn't have been very good for the airflow as it had squeezed out and had oozed out into the inlet ports.

need to careful that it doesn't get sucked into the engine too- if a big enough lump was to break off it could bend a valve :)

best to use the proper gasket

tell me about it!

I'm glad i've taken it back off.

Not sure if i can buy just the inlet gasket.

of course you can Pete, 0349 G1, £2.47.

or a sheet of gasket paper will do the job, not particularly important what you use really as there are no waterways like the 8v head, so just an airtight seal is what you need :)

just out of interest, when using the rs2000 engien mount, do you also have to lower the gearbox mount in some way ?

Well, after much talking and hardly any doing i've decided to make the car into what i wanted in the first place.

So now its getting a rollcage and bucket seats and going on a diet

So keep your eyes open for my 2 sets of leather interiors and all the phase 1.5 interior trims.

right, i'm sorting the rest of the wiring ready to start it and i need some help

do the earth wires bolt to the inner wing and the grey to the gearbox?

th_mixed045.jpg

where does this connect? is it something to do with the horn?

th_mixed044.jpg

what are these for?

th_mixed043.jpg

does this bolt to the same point on the inner wing as the one in the 1st picture?

th_mixed042.jpg

this is connected to the fad fan plug, is it the one that goes to the back of the rad or below the headlight?

th_mixed041.jpg

th_mixed040.jpg

^^^what order do these^^^ should there be more than 3?

go into this?

pic 1, yep.

pic 2, not sure, looks like an earth wire from a multiplug of some sort, possibly headlamp? check for numbers on the wire...

pic 3, normally sod all

pic 4, yes indeedly :P

pic 5, on the top/back of the rad, its the dim-dip one that sits behind the headlamp.

Pic 6 and 7, yes, IIRC they will only fit into one slot in the bottom of the box, 1 for the cooling fan circuit, 1 for the engine (direct to the double relay), and the one for the car.

Yes

Yes or it might be attached to the ignition amplifier plate also attached to the wing. doesn't really matter as tlong as its earthed somewhere

this is connected to the fad fan plug, is it the one that goes to the back of the rad or below the headlight?

th_mixed041.jpg

mine is behind the radiator. carful where you attach it ie don't starp it up against other wires as they get very hot!

yes they go into that. 3 sounds about right, it doesn't matter which slot they go in providing the fuses are the same rating under that little lid, i'm pretty sure they are both the same though (30amps iirc)

cheers gents

the wires that go into the fuse box only fit into certain slots

do i still need the ignition amp?

i cant find a plug anywhere for it, was it on the engine loom for the 8v?

pic 2 is an earth, will i be ok to just snip it and connect it to the other earths?

pic 2, I would find where it came from first!

nope, gti6 doesn't use ignition amps, the coils are fired directly from the ecu, and yes it would have been plugged in on the 8v loom.

well, after much (and i mean much) head scratching due to my stupidness i got the engine started!

it sounded sweet as a nut (very loud though due to the straight through exhaust)

so now i just need to tidy the bay up and sort the rear beam and brakes!!

hopefully it will be ready for its mot at the end of the month

out of interest pete , what eghaust system are you using on your car ? ,

i bought and broke a 205 with a 306 xsi engine in it (it was full of rot ;) )

it had the gti6 manifold on

so i had the lower fork that had been lengthened and the exhaust that had been made for it

the only problem is the lamda sensor is on the wrong side

well i put coolant in the car today and bled the system

it was quite tappy at first, but after it had warmed up it went nice and quiet

just a bit annoyed that my rev counter and oil pressure gauge dont work :)

i sorted the lights problem, the earth on the plug for the headlight wasn't connecting with the pin and the earth for the sidelight was very corroded, so i earthed it to chassis and its now spot on!

time for an update :D

after getting made redundant my whole view of the car changed

some may say for the worse others may think its a good idea

i'm now stripping it again, i cant afford to get it back to the condition i wanted it to be :(

so now i've put a none primered bonnet and wings on it and i'm gona let them rust!!

i'm now calling it the Rat

so what have i done recently

the good bits

i was selling a set of 309 running gear, but got no interest :( so guess where it went :D

its now got 309 rear beam, wishbones, driveshafts and ARB (i cant believe how much thicker the ARB is)

i lowered the car 60mm all round :) i dont care what anybody thinks, i loved my XS when it was that low :)

i put all new pads on (green stuff) new drop links and braided lines

the bad bits

the car is full of water :( rain and coolant, it turns out that my heater matrix is poop

while i was fitting the ARB i felt what seemed like water dripping onto my crotch, it wasn't, turns out my radiator is poop as well!!!

next on the adgenda is to get the cooling system sorted, get my bucket seats off Dr Sarty then order my cage and harnesses

Just read all of this for the first time.

Nice work so far, I'm glad I'm not the only one who's time seems to get eaten up by other stuff going on.

I've learnt things take ages to get round to doing!

I'll be looking out for updates.

its been a while since i updated

since buying the coilovers off skeggyrik, i've done nothing major :(

ive fitted the fronts but now need to buy 'helper springs' (advice would be great)

i want it as low as possible

i've also taken the speedo and throttle cables of one of my mi16s and fitted them to the car

i'm in the middle of trying to convert another loom for my car (the on spikey made will be up for sale soon) i'm using the 306 multi plugs and cutting a hole for it to go through the bulkhead (why are the wires different colours/numbers when they come out of the multi plug?)
