1.9 Gti Fuel Pump Problem

Recommended Posts

Guest stevelee3418

Hi Guys,

Just refitted the gearbox this weekend after my brother desrtoyed the diff. I was well chuffed getting everything back together with no concerns until i tried to start her. The car cranks no problem. Checked the spark, this was ok. Disconnected fuel line from fuel rail and NG. Put 12v direct onto fuel pump and loads of fuel.

Checked to see for loose connections. Everything seems to be connected. there is one connector which i cant identify at the front of the engine. It is quite a large connector but very thin. There is space for two terminals but there is only one fitted. I've searched every where for where this may be for but i can't find anything for it to plug into. (this may be a little red fish).

Does the fuel pump get energised by relay fired by ecu, or should it just be on when the ignition turns on.

Sounds like a faulty fuel pump (tachymetric) relay - it's next to the ECU roughly above your right knee on all but the earliest cars. Chances are if you give it a whack it'll probably start working again, although you'd be wise to replace it as it'll likely happen again in due course in my experience.

Also check that you've not got an alarm/immobiliser fault, and that the 15 amp fuse on the far right hand side (nearest the driver) of the fusebox isn't blown.
