Engine Has Loud Knocking Noise After Trackday

Recommended Posts

mojo1997

Had a great day on my first trackday at Cadwell Park yesterday (bumped into a certain Mr Damon Hill who's son was on track in a Ginetta).

It was an all day open pit trackday, we made it just before dinner when suddenly the engine started to get louder :) . I came off track to have a look but couldn't see anything a miss, but the car sounded a bit like a diesel when you first put on the power. Now it sounds like there's something rattling round inside the engine and it will not tick over. During the on track time the oil pressure and temperature was ok, but I'm wondering if it's the crank bearings through oil surge/starvation because Cadwell has a few long right hand corners that we were taking at high rev's in third gear.

I drained the oil and took the sump and rocker cover off today expecting to discover loads of lumps of metal but couldn't see any obvious problems, what I did see is loads of small metal flakes in the oil making it look like metallic brown paint.

Any ideas what it could be or what I can do to find out....by the way the car is a standard 205 1.9 GTI

I need it fixed soon cos I need my next trackday fix, probably next time I'll use a baffled sump.

My guess is you've knocked a main or big end bearing, needs stripping to determine the extent of the damage, don't run it again till you've done this.

you will need a bottom end rebiuld, most likely a new crank, all new bearings, and perhaps a rod or two. Bin the engine and fit a gti6

any way of checking to see if it is the crank bearings other than stripping it out.........

Drop the sump off (drain the oil first!), then you can remove the big-end caps to see whether the big end bearings have gone. I reckon aim for big-end number 2 to start with, that seems to be the most common to go (I think you can get at it without removing the oil pump). You can also slide out the upper bearings to check those too. So you don't actually need to remove the crank to check things initially.

It doesn't take too long if you've got a power tool to remove the million sump bolts.

Spot on it was big end number 2 that had gone ;) . Why is this common and what cause's it.
