Timing Holes. Urgent Help Needed

quick question, my head gasket blew yesterday big time, between cylinder 2 & 3.

 

 

i have stripped everything off the head

 

i need to lock the timing now,

 

i know there is one hole in the camshaft sprocket but where is the one for the flywheel? and also do i have to take the crank pulley off before i lock the timing?

 

another question is it ok to have the dizzy off before i lock the timing? im worried that i will bugger up the ignition timing if i take it off first and then turn the crank to get the dowels in the locating holes because the end of the camshaft will be in a different place to where it was when i took the dizzy off. cheers

The crank is locked by a 10mm dowel through the bottom pulley, the hole needs to be at 12 o'clock on the engine axis, (30 degrees to the left of vertical as you look at it).

 

As long as you have a mark to refer to on the dizzy housing, you can simply re-align the slots on the drive, taking care to ensure they are offset the right way!

i have a mark on the dizzy for max advance as it was set up on the rollers, im still a little worried though.

 

 

at this moment in time the dizzy is off, it has a scratch mark in it.

 

 

once i have changed head gasket and put head back on how will i be able to know for sure that dizzy is in same place as surely the camshaft will have rotatated and be in a different postion to where it was before and as such the end of camshaft wont locate into the dizzy.

 

apologies if that doesnt make total sense, i know what i mean. lol

Hi !

 

Look on the crankshaft pulley and you'll see a hole on it - turn on the engine (remove the spark plugs first) with the socket/spanner on the crank pulley bolt and align this hole with the one in the engine block (it'll be around 11 o'clock) , you'll need 10mm. locking pins or you can use the drill bits/bolt but make sure that you use 10mm ones (measure if you're unsure !) and push the pin inside trough the pulley and in to the block hole - it must go all the way inside as deep as it goes and tight ..

 

Then look up on the camshaft pulley you'll see the similar hole on the pulley (it'll be around 7 o'clock) , again lock it with the 10mm. pin/drill bit/bolt trough the pulley hole and inside the hole in the head - tight .

If , when you lock the crankshaft pulley , you see that the hole one the camshaft pulley is opposite the hole one the head - remove the locking pin from the crank pulley and turn the engine one revolution further and lock the crank pulley again as described above .. then the hole on the cam pulley must/will be aliened with the one on the head ..

 

As for the dizzy , just mark the original position with the screwdriver (make an scratch ..) or with the paint/marker one the dizzy body and thermostat housing - draw a line from the dizzy body to the thermostat housing ..

there is a slot for the dizzy which will only allow it to go in one way as the slot wider one end than the other . and there is a well a tooth i suppose or a key whatever u want to call it ! well that goes into this slot as said before only will go in one way !

 

easy really cant get it wrong and make sure those timing pins are in the holes tightish so cant fall out :)
