More Mi16 Rebuild Woes

Recommended Posts

smokey

Hiya guys

Well it looked like i was finally out of the woods and this engine rebuild had finally stopped giving me problems.

But no...

Last night i finished taking out the crank (after being told there were side bolts too )

The bearings for the big ends were pretty worn and not much life left in them, so i'm glad i went all the way and did this, dont think it would have gone much further in this state. The journals for the big ends were ok though.

I then moved onto the main shells. But sadly due to this engine being sat for some time by the previous owner, water looks to have got in to the bottom end.

There is some slight marking on two of the main journals but its only on half of the journal. The side of the main bearing where the groove is, is where the mark is. It looks like surface rust got to the journal due to the gap cos the other side where the bearing is solid, is clean.

The marks are in the direction of the way the crank moves, most of it rubbed off with a cloth but there looks to be some slight pitting which can be felt when i drag my finger nail across it.

Not sure if i will be ok to use as it is?

I did read on here that someone said you could use the crank from an 8v and wouldn't notice a difference. Is that true?

I have a 1.6 engine sitting here which i could use .

Thanks

will that not grind out and get oversized main bearings?

It might do, will have to find out.

Thing is this was the last thing i needed, replaced and sorted practically everything on it.

If i could use my 8v crank i would to save me time and money.

Can anyone give any advice on that please?

The main difference will be that the 8v only has 4 counterweights whereas the mi16 has 8 iirc. Another thing i think will come into play is the crank/rod throw (how much it moves the conrod, dont know the correct terminology for it sorry). im sure someone will kick my ass for being wrong now though and say shut up Baz!

I will probably loose allot of power too.

Think i will try and see if QEP can grind it for me. I bought the main bearings from them too, so maybe i can swap them for bigger ones.

Thing is the journal is flat after rubbing it, its just its slightly pitted which is making me think its going to be no good

That would clean up fine on a first grind mate, if you plan on doing the shells anyway id grind it for ultimate piece of mind.

I know how you feel thought mate, i bought mine needing only a headgasket, by the time id finished it needed a crank grind, oil pump, two valves and a block! Just seems never ending, but once its right mate they're good engines, mine still gives me the buzz now!

Get it checked either by QEP or any local engineering firm and get them to supply the bearings to suit, You should be able to see the size or data of the old bearing's as if it's been done before it could be scrap, You could use your 1.6 crank but you would loose CC's for a start

Cool thanks for the replies guys.

Yeah it does feel like a never ending battle Stu!!

Ok i've had a look at whats written on the main bearings and the top half says: S/C 91 E04938

The bottom half says: S/C 90 E04937

Not sure if that means they are standard or not. I was told it would say +10 or something like that if it had been ground.

Any ideas?

Thanks

You can't directly swap a 1600 8v crank for an Mi16 crank, as the 1600 crank is a shorter stroke. You could use a 1900 8v crank if it came to it.

However I think that from the pictures shown the crank may not even need a grind, it may just need polishing. Try gently working at the corroded area with some fine 800 grit wet and dry with plenty of WD40 on. If that easily cleans up the dirty bit you have nothing to worry about. If in doubt take it to an engine machinist and have them check it for size and polish it, whoever supplied your new bearings will probably be able to do this.

The 1600 crank has smaller big end journals too.

Smokey,

Take it to M and J engineering services in Westbury.

01373 826741

Get to the puegeot garage in Westbury (pug garage on your right) and then take the next turning right.

and its just down that road past the ford garage.

Martin and Shawn will sort it out for you, polish it, bearings, the lot. at better prices than i've found anywhere else too.

PS: the crank looks ok from them pics. will probably polish out.

Thanks for the recomendation pee vee.

Took the crank down there and they measured it and polished it for £20, looks really good now ;)

There is still a few small marks but i've been told by them that it will be ok
