Gasket Question

Recommended Posts

Yimkin_FJ

I've finally got round to buying a new cam cover gasket (not before my new block paved drive got covered in oil :-( )

I'm used to fords and making gaskets out of cornflakes boxes, but this is a thick, flexible rubber gasket - so two questions....

1) Do I need to use gasket sealant, or does compression on the rubber from torquing down the bolts do the same job (or for that matter does it sit in a recess?)

2) What are the torque settings for the bolts? I have the Haynes manual, but can't find any torque settings (for anything) in it!

Thanks all!

i'm not an expert on this but i have changed the rocker cover gasket before

1, you dont need gasket sealant, the pressure from the bolts keeps it sealed

2, if its a new haynes they are quite hard to fathom out, you need an old haynes

or download the files you need from here

hope this helps you, as i say i'm no expert

well when i used to work for a agricultural engineering company which was one of the worlds leading competitors . We had those gaskets of some thermostat housings and rocker covers a o - ring based gasket . The instructions that came with the kit said to smear a little amount of the seal we got supplied in the kit . The sealant was not a full hard setting type was a non setting flexible type ! so if u do get some of that sealant

hope that helps :o:)

I think the torque setting is very low, something like 9 or 10 lb/ft. That certainly worked for me. That said after 7000 odd miles I've had to tighten them slightly ... no leak from gasket, but slight wetness around the bolts themselves where they enter the cam cover. Don't whatevr you do overtighten.
