Compression Test

Recommended Posts

large

Well i changed the enegine about 6 months ago 1.6 to a 1.9. The car pickes up well to 4K and not alot after that, did a compression test today but i don't know what i should have.

From left to right

1: 120psi

2:135psi

3:110psi

4:155psi

I have done a search and i could only find the results of a 1.6 and as it's the first time i have done this i have not got a jar of glue

Also i am running a 1.6 A.F.M. would this give me a big drop in power, the car will only do 95mph flat out :( .

Thanks all.

RE the test, what compression tester did you use? Does it use a screw in adaptor or push in type (the latter being crap so I've heard). Did you do it on a hot or cold engine? Did you hold the throttle fully open as you cranked it over?

Did the needle jump up the scale a lot for the first 2 or 3 cranks and then make little jumps up to the max reading?

Those results are low and are also not very even between cylinders, so either the test results are not right or you have some problems.

As for the AFM, when swapping from a 1.6 to a 1.9 you can use injectors, AFM, ECU etc, but need to make sure ALL the components are matched, don't mix and match. It's not theoretically ideal but does work.

Ignoring for a moment the compression results, if the AFM is faulty or you've got a bad mix of parts that culd account for the low top speed. It could be leaning out at the top end or even overfuelling. When I first got my Mi it wouldn't pull past 120, and a few days later the AFM died completely. Stuck a borrowed AFM on it and it then pulled like a train to over 130 and was still going, but my sunroof seal couldn't take any more and I had to back off.

If those compression results are correct then that would be a good reason for it not pulling well, as I think you should be looking at bout 180psi on each cylinder IIRC.

I suspect that the pressures are a bit low and at least should be quite similar to each other, I would wait to get advice from more experienced folk from the forum however as I am still very new to all this.

I converted my 1.6 to a 1.9 over in January and 95 mph seems a little slow, I kept the 1.6 box but can get 115 or so out of the car (on a private road of course).

I changed over the AFM, ECU, dizzy and injectors, I had the wrong AFM for a while and it made a big difference.

Thanks both.

It was a push type of guage the engine was up to temp and the throttle was fully open, I did the hard part of turning the key so i cann't coment on what the needle was up to.

The only reason i am running the 1.6 afm is because the 1.9 one i had went tits up sat on a shelf
