High Idle On Mi16 When Warm

Recommended Posts

sussex_gti

Does it every so often, when the car is nice and warm. Sometimes when i come to a standstill the revs will sit at 1100, 1200, or 1500. Doesnt hunt or idle uneven, just nice and smooth, but too high. Sometimes if i blip the throttle it goes back to 800. Id like to sort this as she may be going Saturday. I was thinking idle control valve, but certain this would cause irratic idle and stalling. Is the idle adjustable?

Cheers, Chris.

I'll put money on it being the throttle position switch. If the "idle" contacts don't "make" when you lift your foot off the pedal, then the signal does not go back to the ECU to return the engine to idle in closed loop mode.

First off make sure the throttle is returning to the stop and the cable is not too tight, then try adjusting the throttle posn switch as per the haynes manual. If this still doesn't sort it then it may well be that the switch is u/s.

To prove if this is the case, you can short between two terminals in the plug to the switch whilst the car is hot and idling high to simulate the switch contacts making. If the idle then drops when you've done this then you have proved it is the switch at fault.

That or the throttle body is slightly sticky and/or the cable is slightly too tight.

Had exactly the same issue... now the ICV doesn't seem to do anything, so it is really hard to start. It was odd - everything was fine, but the revs would jump up randomly. Now the revs never raise up, even when it is cold

It will be interesting to see if this happens to yours too
