James_m 0 Posted March 20, 2008 Hi all, have an annoying problem trying to make my thermostat housing seal. Ive bought a new thermostat, and its come with a random selection of seals none of which seem to do their job. There is one with a lip which i assume is supposed to wrap around the thermostat before it goes into the housing, but the thermostat alone is quite a tight fit so its not going to happen.... Any pointers? How have people done this previously? Cheers James.
welshpug 1,657 Posted March 20, 2008 the last thermostat I fitted had a sealing ring that sat either side of it, but the one before that has a grooved ring like you mentioned that wrapped over the lip, so whichever combination that works!
DamirGTI 342 Posted March 20, 2008 Just clean the mating surfaces on the thermostat housing and water outlet housing/cap , apply some sealant around the edges fit back the water outlet housing/cap , tight the bolts and it'll be fine ... i always use sealant when i'm changing the thermostat as i never get a new seal including in the package with the new thermostat ! and i never ever had leaking problems afterwards ... Regards ! Damir

pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted March 21, 2008 Standard fit on older thermostat housing pre wrap-around seals was two thinner seals, one either side of the thermostat in the housing. Thats the usual combination thats comes with a new thermostat kit iirc. Graham.
James_m 0 Posted March 21, 2008 Thanks for the replies everyone. I ended up doing as pugtorque suggested using the 2 thinner rubber seals as well as silicone sealant and thankfully it now seals. 205 now back on the road! Woo!
