Revs Drop Below Idle & Ignition Lights After Motorway Driving....

Recommended Posts

Guest Jamese30

Hi Everyone,

After several miles of driving at motorway speeds (70mph) then rolling to standstill at traffic lights/junctions as I come off the throttle and roll to a stop in neutral my revs will drop below idle temporarily and the ignition lights will come on, and then almost immediately will pick up, the ignition lights will go off, and revs will resume to idle at 1,200rpm again.

Has anyone else experienced this?? Is this just an idle problem, as the car has been fuelling itself to motorway speeds and the sudden change has confused the ECU?

My car is a 1990 1.6GTI - I don't know if this makes any difference?

Thanks in advance,

James

Sounds like classic 205 bad idle syndrome to me, the cures have been discussed on here often.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your reply. WOuld you still put it down to "GTI idle" as I don't get this problem during normal town driving.

I have this problem to at the minute but more worryingly for me my oil pressure sits rite on the first white line when i come to a stop from 60. only after a drive home of about 8 miles does it happen but this is down a 60mph road.it did cut out the other day when coming from 60 to stand at a junction but this i belive was due to the revs dipping below 500rpm when coming to the stop.the car doesnt seem to settle the revs at 1000-1200 but drops below to almost cut out then brings them back up.

A good clean of all air related pipes tomorrow and a new oil pump is on the way.

Chris
