Rev Limiter - Have I Got One ?

Recommended Posts

gtimon

Having seen a motor blow the other day at a trackday made me think of Rev Limiters.

Has my 1.9 GTI got a limiter as I often go up to 6k through the gears and near on a good fast track.

Has it got one and are they adjustable. ??

I can confirm that the 1.9 of your vintage is rev limited - I've hit it a few times, but I can't remember what exactly - 6500rpm ish I think!!!

This will stop you over revving on the way up, but not over revving on the over run - ie changing down too soon.

There is of course, nothing to say that that is how the one you saw blew up.

With it out of gear my old 1.9 1993 GTi went up over 7k rpm and would have kept going until I backed off. In gear though it wouldn't do any more than 6k and that was hard work. I knew my engine was pretty much fooked at the time, which is why I thought I'd rev it to find the limiter. But even then I was too scared.

Should be around 6600 for an 8v. I have a 16v so it revs to 7200 and I have my shift light set to 7050 so I change around 7150 on sprints and track days for every gear change, no point wasting bhp

Thats an idea with the 'shift light', how is that setup. Where is the source for the light, for as and when you want to shift.

Thanks

Mines wired into the 12v feed for the cigarette lighter. It works by picking up the pulses on the 12v feed as the engine fires and it has a knob you adjust to set the shift light. Bit hard to see in most of my videos due to the light and its quite directional but you can see it in this video down the hill.

Have a look on ebay or you can buy various ones new from £60 or something. Set it to what you want, 6k if thats where you feel happiest and put it on top of the dash so its in your peripheral vision without moving your eyes. Its nearly impossible to see a rev counter most of the time as you have to look down taking your eyes off the road, steering wheel gets in the way etc

Most 1.9 8vs run out of puff just over 6000rpm so should really ever hit it (I could never hit it in my old 8v which was a healthy engine).

Thanks for that,

but can you give a clue of where or what I'm looking for on Ebay.

This sort of thing or this etc, search on there for shift light. Probably worth emailing any seller and asking how they wire up. Some need a feed from the rev counter then 12v and earth, mine just needed earth and 12v so I nicked the cigarette lighter ones
